  1. The main culprit is the pinion bearing seal, crawl under the truck and look at the point where the front driveline/u-joint enters the front axle (that is the pinion, next to where the oil filter spins onto the engine). Assuming the pinion seal gave out I would also assume the pinion bearing is bad, if the pinion bearing went then the ring & pinion are also likely shot and basically everything in the case will need repacing except the carrier. Again I say ASSUMING so get it checked out. If you do find that the ring & pinion must be replaced PM me, I've found 2 low-mileage front carrier assemblies in the northern latittitudes for $600 US + freight. If you do decide to rebuild the one you have then the going rate is $1300 US.

It is alternatively possible that you burned-up the bearings/seals at the end of one of the axles (either the left or right side); if this is the case then your ring & pinion are probably still useable, all you would need is a rebuild to replace bearings and seals and those parts should cost under a couple hundred dollars US, plus the rebuild labor...

    Wishing you good luck -

    Mr. P. :)

Well just got the truck back last Friday....$1686.29Cdn....Front Differential....Side bearings damaged, preload lock pins sheared off, fluid contaminated....replaced all front diff bearings (side, pinion, axle) and pinion seal.....I'd say you had the problem pegged....thanks Mr. P....time to put another 200km's on her.....ps. ....I have still noticed a slight smell of gear oil on a few occasions while coming to a stop and I'm going to mention it to the dealer who serviced the vehicle, the vent connector was replaced as well and I dont know if there is some residual oil left around that is burning off or the vent itself needs replacing....the parts and labour are under warranty for a year so I'll let them know for the record...thanks again

  2. and the distinct smell of gear oil as you come to a stop, it fills the cab with the odor. It started on a trip from Ottawa to Welland (5.5 hrs) heard some whining and the smell happened as I exited the highway. I got it home and noticed the leak today. I have an 03 with 196,000 enjoyable kilometers (Canadian truck). I realise I'm in for a repair bill but has anybody else experienced anything like this?
