  1. Dad just ordered a RAM1500 with 5.7, 8speed, air ride

he wants to sell his old truck. Maybe I should sell the SSS and take his?

    Dad truck is a 2001 F-250 7.3 Diesel with 180K miles
    -Tubronetics (spelling?) Ball Bering Turbo
    -Banks intercooler
    -Magnaflow Exhaust
    -Banks power elbow
    -DP 5 postion tuner
    -AEM? Cold air intake
-Aftermarket Radio with Nav and XM
    -4" Lift
    -20" wheels with 35" tires
-a older but working 8' Fisher Plow

    Recent Maintenance:
-Injector O-rings done last summer 2015
-New trans with 3 year warranty installed last spring 2015
    -New upgraded Alternator 2014
    -New upgraded Starter spring 2015
    -New Rear Leaf Springs 2013
    -New Turbo O-rings and HIPO O-rings 2014
-New Water pump and hoses Fall 2015

    Problems:
-body rot under the bed (bed supports) and around the wheel wells. We put fender flairs and POR15 the rust on the wheel wells
-some sort of noise from the front end, need to investigate

    My truck:
2004 Silverado SS AWD with 165K miles
-just "fixed" rot on the rear fender wells and the rockers. the body work on the one side looks bad, other is great
    -front bumper is beat up
-new trans back in 2014 (this time by a new builder with many upgrades and has been working great, knock on wood)
-If i keep this one, dad said i can have his old touchscreen radio from the F250

Dad would be happy with 8K so I can sell my truck to give him 8K or just sell his truck and maybe get 8-10K

  2. Hey guys,

So i got my truck back! New trans by a new builder. Very happy

I still need to do rear brakes (have just need to install) and front hubs.

However, the exhaust leak has grown significantly since the trans has been removed and installed so many times.

I need help finding a good gasket for the collectors

I am almost positive the headers are the cheap OBX long tubes from ebay. It seems the gasket is the donut type. Looks like 3"

Can anyone point at the right ones or know if some style is better?

Also what is a good clamp for the slip together piece from the midsection to the muffler section?

  3. Well the SSS is fixed. Going to pick her up later tonight hopefully.

The trans builder used some choice and colorful words to describe the work that was done. Said there was a lot of old and used parts performabuilt reused instead of just replacing cheap 4 and 5 dollar parts.

If this trans last 50K miles I will be so happy. The longest performabuilt was maybe 15K-20K?

Still need to do front hubs, fix and exhaust leak, rear brakes, and fix some broken LED's in the cluster / heat controls

  4. Glad to see you didn't go back with Performabuilt for yet another go around. After having 2 of their level 3's fail I went with a local reputable builder who put far more into my 65E then Performabuilt did. My builder said there was nothing special about the Performabuilt unit, that there wasn't much more than a half ass shift kit in it that he couldn't identify. He also told me that it appeared to be an older 60E that had the 65E planetary. Stay away from Performabuilt.

Woah. This is crazy. I just signed in to say the same thing. That is almost word for word what my new builder just said and I trust him a lot more (was highly recommended by my buddy who owns a shop. They send all GM trans to him) . Also the servo is way to stiff and that blew a cheap Chinese manufactured 2-4 band. He is changing the planetary, the input shaft, and he either said it had a z pack or he is going to install one along with total rebuild. Cell was breaking up. $2000 with having my buddy pull/install the trans :(

he also said: "its weird. they used shitty parts and i am not surprised to see it blow. However, they used a good torque converter. Just odd they would sell this crap and then a good budget converter." I laughed and told him that i had a performabuilt converter fail and I installed a Circle D converter. he said "ha, no shit. it all makes sense now"

  5. My truck has been a PITA. Left me stranded a few times with trans problems

Next truck is a 2014-2015 Diesel Dodge Ram 2500 crew cab short bed :)

trying to get to 250,000miles on SSS

    I jinxed myself...

    Trans blew 2 weeks later

  6. Ugh this truck is killing me...

Trans blew yet again. Driving home from work on the highway at around 75mph. It downshifts into 3rd to pass someone (not hard, very gradual) and then it just never went back into 4th. I get off the highway and it seems to be holding 1st gear very long and will not shift until i let off the gas. I changed the shift solenoid, TPS, and did a trans service based on what I read online and nothing changed. Seems like the 2-4 band broke. I only have 1st and 3rd. FML

FYI it was a performabuilt level 3 trans....

Truck needs rear brakes (I have parts)

Front hubs (have 1, needs 2)

    Trans rebuild

    misc smaller things

and recently it got a CEL for a "small EVAP leak"

I should just fix it and sell it but don't want a truck payment and really can't do that since I am in the process of buying a house.

Blown original trans at around 80 or 90K in 2008

Blown again in 2010 (would overheat and die)

Blown again in early 2012 about a month out of warrenty (pump blew)

reinstall to find a huge leak, rebuild was faulty, sent back, reinstall

    Blown again in 2015

Debating paying yet another 1k for performabuilt or have a local builder (who will be more expensive) but i am so sick of it breaking and i think i gave performabuilt enough opportunities to make it right...

Really want this truck to last another 4-5yrs then I am going to get a used 2014 ram 2500

  7. So a while back my brakes were terrible. Got to the point it was downright unsafe.

I did some searching and assumed the master cylinder was shot. Decided to do the hydroboost conversion while I was at it.

I purchased a take off from ebay with the pump, lines, booster, and master cylinder. I ended up buying a new master cylinder though.

Problem No. 1: The lines were far too short, ordered new lines

Problem No 2: I am an idiot and didn't fully press the pulley on the new pump thus making a ton of noise. you guys helped me figure that out

As i went to bleed the brakes i noticed the front brakes were shot. Searching on here i ended up doing the 07 Tahoe conversion. With all this done my brakes were maybe 10% better. Still Horrid.

Problem 3: I searched and found i need the bleed the ABS unit. I did the old dirt road trick and bled them out.

    Brakes still suck

I replaced all the flex lines (front with stainless)

    Brakes still sucked!

Well over the weekend i left my truck in one spot and notice a little tiny pool of fluid in the rear. I thought I must have a leak in the new line.

Nope! Blown caliper. Fluid was leaking and burning on the rotor.

    New brake caliper installed yesterday.

WOAH! Brakes are amazing! good thing i had my seatbelt on when i tested them!

    Finally the truck stops well.

Just wanted to let people know the 07 tahoe conversion and hydroboost is well worth the time and money. I am now very happy.

but as my luck would have it, CEL just came on this morn and I can not find my scan tool!

    Thanks for all the help!

  8. Ok so i am an idiot....

Pump is fine, no leaks, stops AMAZING, everything bled, no noise

the noise was from the belt. apparently the pulley needs to be flush with the shaft

I put a straight edge to it and noticed how far it was off (about 1/8")

Got it right and now there is no noise.

    things i have learned:

    1) do what idahoeBLKss said if using the old pump and a T.

    2) make sure the damn pulley is on right

    3) make sure your used stuff is the right one for your truck ( my lines were too short off a 2500 HD)

    4) read the directions for the puller/installer

I must say GM SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS FROM DAY 1

they put a large motor in a heavy ass truck, loaded with awesome features, and even made it have the strain of AWD but put the junkiest trans and brakes possible in it....

  9. Are you bleeding the pump after install? And are you sure your hydro boost pump is connected correct?

Just jacked the front and turned lock to lock about 10 times. I got the pump to the hydro, hydro to steering, low pressure lines are from hydro to pump and box to pump.

Sounds like you got most of it done now but I didn't pull the pulley off I took the altjnator off and pulled the accessory bracket off to get to the back of the pump made it pretty easy.

Ah I wish I thought of that!
  10. Hearing a squeal only under acceleration. God please don't be the pump

NO! As Ive stated a few times.. GET A PUMP FROM GM.. from a DEALERSHIP and don't "T" it... you'll regret doing that later.

rent a pulley puller from autozone for like 20 bucks.. (you get the 20 back when you return it).. you can get the pulley off in a few minutes.. unless its really fubar'd on there.. in which case, you'll bend the hell out of the pulley getting it off, resulting in needing a new one. so in the end.. worse case.. you wind up with a new pump, a new pulley, all which lines up perfectly fine with everything else needed for the hydroboost swap.

Yeah I'm trying to do this on a low budget. Think the pump may be bad idk yet. Truck is rusting bad too :(
