  1. There might be two fuel pumps, one in the tank, and one outside of the tank (on the line). Also, check to see about in in-line fuel filter, see if it's clogged. Might want to make sure you have good fuel. I've lost a coil on a V6 3.8 engine before, and it started and ran, rough starting, and sounded sick, but would run. This is easy, go through your entire engine bay, looking at all of the wires, full length, to make sure none has been cut, torn, or tattered. Also, check all connections to make sure they are secure. Check all fuses as well.

Didn't swap out the factory radio recently?

i wanna think its the coil but i know its not.... if there is or isnt spark the damn pump doesnt stay on..

actually yeah.. i got a aftermarket stereo in it.. but thats a hole other thing right???? i mean its got its on fuse and stuff.. and the only prob i heard with changing the stereo is that the airbags wont work... not the pump

i mean you can only hear the pump turn on for one second then back off.. my other silverado i can hear the pump without getting next to the truck

If you have no CEL light then it is most likely fuel related IMO. FPR, pump, filter. I am curious to see if you have pressure. Do you know where your shrader valve is on the fuel line. When you turn you key on, have your buddy push the shrader valve in and see if fuel spits out. If not, you have no fuel pressure. The 03's have a return system and the pressure bleeds out after the fuel pump primes the line. Happens in about 3 seconds after you key on so you will need a buddy to help ya on this one.

I am leaning toward fueling issues because you stated you used starting fluid and it rolled over.

If you are in "reduced engine power" mode check your TB connections. If moisture is in there, you will be in limp mode. Happens everytime I wash my engine bay.

Oh, you have a 2WD 03 SSS? They didn't exsist...

yeah, theres no check light.. it has to be fuel related.. maybe electricl... the shrader valve??

"reduced engine power" mode????? i havent washed my engine yet... i've wiped it down...

just check the connectors for the TB? i cleaned out the TB for the hell of it...

actually guys i have to be honest here.... my trucks are only silverados not SS... i wish!!!!!

i will have one...... one day

i dont know where else to go for help.. i would think fellow silverados people on here will help me out.. i actuall got 01 03 silverados.. 4.8L 1500 2WD EXT. cab both under 100 K miles

sorry guys for saying i got a SS

I would rule out the Coil/wire... Ls engine will start with a bad coil, but then throw a random misfire/ cyl misfire code. Hell, It will run with whole side unplugged on an F body.

The pump should only cycle for a few seconds, then shut off after rail has pressure.

In some ls engines the coil fires the injector... Hook a noid light up to each one, and check for pulse.

hook up a test light to each spark plug wire?

un-plug from spark plug and put in the test light in the wire? then crack / try to start?

    for each wire?

what if i get a mutl-meter thing and hook that up for readings voltage or something?

the 03 silverados pump stays on for maybe 10 second or more....

the 01 silverado just turns on for one second then back off.. and to that i have to play with the keys turn on and off 3-5 times before i hear anything from the pump to turn on..

thats what i was thinking a coil prob but then the check light would come up...

it has to be electrical or fuel related stopping the truck from starting

  2. I think when the APP (Accelerator Pedal Position) Sensors go out of sync the engine shuts down, and you're in sneaker mode.

Do you have a SES light on? Check the connector down by the gas pedal to see if it's loose ...

    no check lights on

whats the connector look like or color?

  3. turn the ignition on and see if the fuel pump is on

it doesnt turn on.. if i turn on and off the key maybe 3-5 times in a roll fast... i can hear the pump turn on.. and i disconnected the inlet fuel line for the filter and seen fuel come out when i get the pump to turn on

but the pump doesnt still on... on the other silverado i can hear the pump just standing next to th truck

My based on your post my first two thoughts would be coil or coil wire..have you tried any test to check for good spark? Those are my initial thoughts after hearing it 'died while running' and that is sounds like it wants to turn over.

thats is my guess as well.. the coil but how would i go about testing that? i got the starting spray and the truck almost started 2 times but didnt...

How many miles are on the truck? Fuel pumps tend to go on GM cars at around 90k miles, turn your key on and listen for the pump.

Almost forgot....I am a newbie here, just picked up my SS last week! Hi to all, looks like a cool site!

its got about 99702 miles on it i think

the pump turns on for a second but back off.. it wont stay on

and to that the pump wont turn on every time i turn the key to the ON position

ok i got the new pump in but still doesnt turn on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i cleaned the ground for the tank the pump has a new connector on it (it came with a plug)

what about the mass air sensor? does silverados come wih it?

give me some commons on what i should check / test please people!!!!!!!!!

  4. Always check the easy stuff first like the gas tank. I have seen people look at me like I'm calling them a dumb ass or something and tell me their gauge says it has gas. But when I get them to add gas it starts right up the gauge or float was messed up. So try that first.

i had jsut put in 20 bucks in gas.. there should be enough gas...

i was just driving and it dies...

any other ideas on what to check (easy stuff?))

  5. ok people, i need help!!

i need to fix my truck today

this morning my truck just died.. i was driving along and then i press the gas more down and my truck just dies..

once i'm off to the side of the road i try to re-start the truck and it just turns over.. (cranking) acting like it wants to start up but something is stopping it from starting

i know its not the battery, the alt, starter... but what could stop it from starting???????

does the fuel pumps go out often on these trucks??

maybe a sensor keeping it from starting?

you guys got any ideas that i should be looking at?????

    any help please!!!

  6. Update:

about a week ago my speedo stop working and now the miles arent working...

is this normal? i mean i read alot of the other threads on speedo and the oil gauge or whatever is the next one to go

how much do the panel clusters change between the years?????????

i mean if i got a 03 cluster and put it on a 01, would it work???? or put the 01 cluster on the 03?

i dont have warranty... i read on another thread one of you guys called a number that in the bac of the manual

    what is the number???

WHAT WOULD CAUSE THE CLUSTER TO STOP WORKING?????????

this sucks that all you guys and myself are having this prob..

IS THERE SOME KINDA RECALL OR SOMETHING?????????????

  7. ok so heres the story

2 or 3 weeks ago i installed this SONY cdx-m8800 cd player just a standard deck

and everything was great!! nothing stop working ....

but the memory wouldnt work or something so i left it only untill yesterday

now yesterday i checked the wires which on had volts with key off and on and found two different wires one read 4-5 volts with key out and 10v with key on

and the second wire showed .80 volts off and 12.5v with key on

with these two wires together the stereo holds memory for about 5 minutes and im back at square one... with the stereo not holding memory

but before i put everything back together i, by mistake touched the power wire with the ant. wire and blew the stereo fuse...

changed out the fuse and everything worked.. or at least i thought it did.. so this morning i took off and noticed my speedo didnt work

everything else did gas, oil, volts but not the speedo

i was looking at the speedo and it moves maybe a 1/4 of a inch up when i turn the key to the "ON" position and then back down 1/4 of an inch whyen i turn it off

i searched and found a couple of ways to go by fixing it

    updating the software

    buy a new cluster

or send it in to some guy on ebay and get ir repaired

but i read most of the other post on here and you guys speedos stop working and stay stuck at 30-50 MPH

mine is just stuck at zero

and others with incorrect speed reading but mine doesnt move at all

LOL i hit it and it move but just barely

i need help but ont wanna spend a arm and a leg on this

im thinking of going with the guy on ebay cuz he gives a one year warranty but have any of you guys tired him out???????

is there any kinda fuse to fix this????????

  8. a old sony m800 or something i forgot the model...

standard deck.. im actually having problems with the memory on that stereo.

i cant seem to find the memory wire on the trucjk...

i found that its green but theres like 3 different green wires on mine

  9. Nothing hard about it if all your looking for is a laptop in a mount. We use Ram Mounts no-drill mounts in our patrol cars. For internet connection we use a verizon aircard. They have broadband available now, but we haven't upgraded to it yet. We installed external antennas on the roof too but I have found we don't need them. I have been using mine without the external for months and have no connection issues.

    post-1454-1174053842_thumb.jpg

you guys use labtops for your patrol cars?..

    cool..

the computers we use are mounted in the trunk

then a 10inch screen with keyboard up front with tthe screen mounted right in front of the factory stereo

thats what i was reffering to.. the verizon aircard thing..

works great be on the web doing whatever you want...

need direcrtions and dont have GPS.. MAPQUEST.COM

dont feel like messing around with your cds... just play music off the computer(hard drive)

    lol fax from the car

    print pictures LOL

i would take the computer setup over a aftermarket stereo anyday..

i mean if you got a indash 7 inch tv cool but your kinda limit on what you can add..

unless you add a computer to it

but then you'll be adding to the cost

  10. this is actuall kinda simple

theres a couple of ways to go about this...

the first more complex way is to open up a desktop PC and remove all of its components..

and find mounting places for each item within your truck.. figure out the wiring for PS and hook ups for the touch screen tv

second way get a labtop and mount it somewhere then hook up the touch screen tv

you can also keep you factory radio in place and get this center consloe thing like in the pic below...

    (IMG:http://phasethreeservices.com/private/SS/incarpc/images/HPIM0435.jpg)

get the touch screen and add a car computer to it...

theres more ways but these are the most common that i do/come across

the sweet thing about having a computer in your car you can hook up the computer from your truck to the computer you put in and see whats going on with your engine etc...

you can get a verizon wireless card and go on the internet

of course get a dvd drive and watch dvds..

    burn cds in the truck!!!

    endless possibles with the computer

  11. how can i check the fuel pressure? what tool(s) do i need?

i might take in the alt tomorrow

clean the TB throw in fuel tank thing

    check the batt cables

ok i turn on the truck

    idles fine no problems

then i step on the brake put in R or drive and it idles real low then stalls i guess or something then dies..

i did drive the truck BUT i had to put in N every time i let go the gas so that it wouldnt turn off

when its in P or N everything fine...

it drives fine with no problems until i let go of the gas

    what is the PCM???

    no codes at all...

wait.. the ONLY thing was the light for my battery.. which was dead.. thats why i replaced.. but after replacing still the same problem..

tomorrow ima try to clean the TB and throw in some bbk fuel thing

PCM= Power Control Moduel. Its a little computer that controlls your engine, transmission, etc.

Maybe have your alternator checked. If that is bad your battery will drain quickly and the truck could possibly die. Does it act like there is no power (engine doesn't have any go)? If that is the case you are missing one or more of three important things that your engine needs to run. (fuel, air, spark)

I had a situation with a '95 dodge once, it would run fine for a while and then loose almost all power. The local dealership told me it was either the injectors or the fuel pump. I had a service tech test the fuel pressure and it was way low, so that ruled out the injectors and i put a new fuel pump in it. (i had to lift the bed up to remove the stupid pump in the tank) :banghead:

I would start by checking the simple things, alternator, fuel pressure, air filter, etc.

  12. what is the PCM???

    no codes at all...

wait.. the ONLY thing was the light for my battery.. which was dead.. thats why i replaced.. but after replacing still the same problem..

tomorrow ima try to clean the TB and throw in some bbk fuel thing

sounds like you might have some problems with the PCM. Is it throwing any trouble codes besides the battery? If your injectors are messing up, you should have some sort of a code.
  13. sorry this may not be the place for this topic but i need help

i have (i think) the vortec 5.7 and my truck dies..

i turn it on ... it idles fine but when i put it in R or D it dies

    thats my current problem

this all started totday.. first my battery was dead... so i replaced the batt with a new one...

everything was fine for 5 mins ( i took it around the block a few times ) then the same problem happened. it dies...

i took it in to CSK auto and they tested my charging system and there little thingy device said my battery was unstable

how can this be if the batt is new and just bought from CSK auto

i told them that i just got the batt

(the guy knows i did cuz he saw me)

i took it to the dealer and they told me it could maybe be the fuel injectors... ( $130 to fix)

but i know i can do the work..

but my question is can you physically take out the fuel injector and clean it with some type of cleaner??

i got some BG products for the tank and the TB cleaner which ima do tomorrow but what else could be killing my truck?

    somebody help!!!
