COZWV Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 My 2004 SS only has 8500 miles on it. Lately it has been idling rough and the check engine light comes on. I thought maybe I had got some bad fuel so I refilled it with more and added fuel system cleaner. Went to PA yesterday and it seemed fine on the way up (ahout 90 miles) When I was coming back it was running bad and the check engine light stayed on all the way home. Anybody else had this problem?
Dylan06SS Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 You need to have the codes read to see what the issue is. Take it to the dealer or any autozone can read it for you... at least then you'll know what you're dealing with.

I don't know what they use for a fuel filter but if their only using the filter sock on the end of the pickup tube in the tank IMO it's not enough and would allow dirt to make it to the injectors!

BenKey Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 What's with the feeling that an injector could be at fault first? Just not that common. First off, get the codes checked. Sounds like it will be a misfire code. Remember, if the SES light starts to blink, park it as soon as possible until you figure it out. I would check your plug wires. Pull them off and then put them back on. One click for the plug ends, two clicks for the coil ends. Listen for the two clicks on the coils, just feel it for the plugs. If you can't feel or hear it, take it back off and do it again until you do. If that doesn't work, then I would look at your plugs. After that, maybe the wires, or a coil. If not any of those, then maybe look somewhere else.
CoolBlueSS Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 It only has 8500 miles on it. Take it to the dealer. It's under warranty.

COZWV Posted January 24, 2005 Author Report Posted January 24, 2005 Dealer fixed my ride today! #1 and #3 Injectors were bad. Surprised me because of the way it would intermittantly jerk while in cruise. I was guessing electrical. Of course I also don't know squat about new motors. Tailgate cables replaced 9000 mile service completed. Now to get it home and back in the garage! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!
Jonmalibuss Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 What's with the feeling that an injector could be at fault first? Just not that common. I guess you havn't looked for your fuel filter have you? Maybe because the only filter for the fuel sys. is the cheep a$$ sock on the end of the pick up tube in the tank. Just not enough filtration IMO!
SuperDave Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 What? You mean there isn't a big ass stainless steel canister filter with AN fittings mounted on the drivers side frame rail under the cab on your truck?

You mean there isn't a big ass stainless steel canister filter with AN fittings mounted on the drivers side frame rail under the cab on your truck? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nope, nada, nothing at all I think this changed in 04 I have heard the 03's have them but the 04's don't . All I know is I have searched from the tank to the fuel rail and back just hard/flex line no filter! The filter you are talking about is listed in parts books at like (Auto Zone) for a 1/2 ton 04 silverado with the 6.0 but I think either the SS got skipped or it's a misprint.

If your's is an '04, as well as the other one that had the problem, then maybe GM has switched to a cheaper quality injector? Not sure. To assume that the injector is the fault right off the bat is just off. In all my years of working with vehicles, mine or other, injectors have never been the problem. In all the years my engine builder has been building and/or working on other's people's vehicles (talked to him yesterday) he has never seen one incident. Never said it can't happen. I would guess that that is not the first place the tech looked, unless it is like I said, a cheap quality injector on '04s. If the '04s don't have a filter on the rail like '03s and below, then I would assume they are in the tank along with the fuel pump? Not sure on that though. I thought that '04s had the filter along the rail also.
SuperDave Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 Just to butt in here.... My Sister In Law had a 1985 Trans Am... it had two major flaws, it ate those high dollar directional tires like they were candy, and it constantly had to go in the shop for injector cleaning or replacement. Just a small deposit from bad fuel or a slight case of reversion would stop them up enough to drip fuel and not atomize it properly. I realize that tons of improvement have been made since then, but it definitely is a possibility. Just because you haven't encountered it is no reason to deny the possibility... Didn't mean to sound like a smart ass Ben, you're just being obtuse

NateZ Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 04's have the filter in the fuel module inside the tank. (in addition to the sock on the bottom of the pump) Nate
