shadowmaker Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Ok, I m really thinking hard about this again, so I thought of a few more questions. I have a 00 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP now, a few mods, nothing to boast about. The biggest thing I hate about it is it rattles. The dash has a common rattle, the sunroof has a rattle, passenger said door trim, console (the only one mine doesnt have ) Does the SS have any "common rattles"? How bout tires, do the factory tires last a while? Whats the avg price of a decent replacement? Leg room in the back, I have 2 boys, 5 & 7, test driving it they seem to have room. I m 6'2 and I have room but how would it be on say a 5 hr trip with 2 adults back there? I read alot about the trannies. Are they that weak or just the weak point once you add a bunch of mods? How hard is it to make one a 14 sec truck? My Grand Prix avgs 14.2-14.5. Is there a national event that is held in the same location or do they just vary? Is there usually a pretty good turnout? Brad
dcairns Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Does the SS have any "common rattles"? Mine has been solid The most common complaints are : "steering clunk" a problem all Silverados seem to have. Easy to have the dealer fix. Wavy cladding. Seems to bother some folks more than others. How bout tires, do the factory tires last a while? Whats the avg price of a decent replacement? 32K on the stock tires so far. While I am sure there are better tires out there, they are pretty good for factory tires. Leg room in the back, I have 2 boys, 5 & 7, test driving it they seem to have room. I m 6'2 and I have room but how would it be on say a 5 hr trip with 2 adults back there? I can't imagine adults being happy in the back seat for long trips. I read alot about the trannies. Are they that weak or just the weak point once you add a bunch of mods? The SS has the 465e, which is a beefed up 460. It will be just fine on a stock or lightly modded truck. I have a supercharger, and in 30K supercharged miles, it is still holding up fine, but I expect the transmission to have a shorter life due to the extra abuse the supercharger dishes out. How hard is it to make one a 14 sec truck? My Grand Prix avgs 14.2-14.5. Not too hard from what I hear. You could probably do it with just a custom tune. Is there a national event that is held in the same location or do they just vary? Is there usually a pretty good turnout? I don't think we have had a full on national event yet.
shadowmaker Posted January 19, 2005 Author Report Posted January 19, 2005 Thanks dcairns. A supercharger is another thing I will miss. But $5k to add one to the SS??? That will never be affordable for me. You eased my mind on some concerns. BTW its Blue also. Brad
smit Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 2003 SS-15000 miles, no rattles. I've got a 98 GTP. Only rattle was in passenger door panel. Fixed by dealer under warranty. No problems with SS except steering clunk. Fixed by dealer. I luv the SS. It's got ballz.
ChevySSandChevy8.1 Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 have had 2 Silverado SSs no rattles or problems to complain about, but the largest amount of miles I had on one was 14000 and I traded it in, got about 3000 on the newer one and no rattles or problems with either one. If your grand prix rattled so much, you should have had a dealer check it, they usually can fix those problems under warranty.
383ss Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Does the SS have any "common rattles"? no rattles at all and I'm over 45,000miles. How bout tires, do the factory tires last a while? Whats the avg price of a decent replacement? again 45k on the truck and tires have a lot left on them. I think it will get 60-70k easily. I'm pretty suprised! Are they that weak or just the weak point once you add a bunch of mods? mine is lightly modded and I have no problems at all. How hard is it to make one a 14 sec truck? My Grand Prix avgs 14.2-14.5. very easy. hell, it will run 14.9's STOCK in great weather. Is there a national event that is held in the same location or do they just vary? Is there usually a pretty good turnout? there has been one in topeka and a couple smaller ones in texas... not sure on turnouts.
shadowmaker Posted January 20, 2005 Author Report Posted January 20, 2005 Reason I didnt have the dealer fix the "rattles" is bc most, including mine, are idiots. I fixed some of them myself but over time they seem to come back. The sunroof and right side started rattling after warranty. I by no means hate the GTP. Its a great car, good of gas, has power, etc etc. Just the annoying rattles. If I could afford to keep both of them, I would and honestly wish I could. Thanks for the info guys. Brad
styleandspeed Posted January 20, 2005 Report Posted January 20, 2005 I have a 00 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP now, a few mods, nothing to boast about. The biggest thing I hate about it is it rattles. The dash has a common rattle, the sunroof has a rattle, passenger said door trim, console (the only one mine doesnt have ) Does the SS have any "common rattles"? I have had one rattle that was easily fixed by myself in about 3 minutes. I had one more, but it went away on it's own. Don't know why. How bout tires, do the factory tires last a while? Whats the avg price of a decent replacement? Factory tires last a long time, and good replacements can be found in the $150 range. These tires are now a common size because of the dodge trucks with 20's. Leg room in the back, I have 2 boys, 5 & 7, test driving it they seem to have room. I m 6'2 and I have room but how would it be on say a 5 hr trip with 2 adults back there? I had 2 almost 6' guys in there for a 2.5 hr trip and it was fine, I don't think it would be comfortable for much longer than that though. I read alot about the trannies. Are they that weak or just the weak point once you add a bunch of mods? They are just weak when you add a bunch of mods. If you do a shift kit and servos they have been known to handle mid 13's pretty well. How hard is it to make one a 14 sec truck? My Grand Prix avgs 14.2-14.5. Super easy, and not very expensive. Just a PCMforless tune ($250) gets most people into the mid 14's. Do a couple more bolt-ons and you are in the low 14's. BTW, where are you located? Aaron
