Headers Yes or No??

I am thinking about purchasing some headers for my 03' SS but i'm unsure if the gain is enough to justify the cost. For those of you who have headers how much gain in hp did you see? and what brand of headers did you use?

Yes. Mid-length or long tube - don't waste the time on shorties. HP gained is not worth the effort for them.

How about leaks with Headers?? I had headers on a 93 Z28 and a 70 Charger when I was younger. I had to keep a 7/16" straight wrench in the glove box in order to tighten up header bolts about once a week. I also seemed to always blow out header gaskets and get the annoying "tick, tick" sound. Another problem I had on my charger was replacing starters due to the header wrapping around it. Anyone ever have these problems?

I have put headers on my last three trucks and have not had any of those issues. Lucky I guess.

My friends who are all chevy freaks :chevy: (as they should and everyone should be) have 2 silverados (both lifted with tons of other mods) and a burban about to be lifted.. They put headers on all three and all three of the trucks had leaking problems.. I told them i was thinking about a whole exhaust system and they told me not to touch the manifold cause ill have leak problems forever.. so im just going with high flow cats and either a corsa exhaust or just a super 40 muffler.. to each his own though..

note- they are restoring form the ground up i think a 79 chevy something truck ... they got a 396 in her and sitting on 44's.. ill post some pics when they are done..im 6'5" and ill need a latter to get in it..

I just purchased a set of Hedman Headers for $340. I have been told by some trustworthy local mechanics that they perform just as well as those high dollar brands. Guess we'll find out. :fingersx:

Definitely worth the cash I paid for my dynatech's.

I had a few leaks. Well, one leak, honestly. It was at a slip-fit - I had to use some exhaust sealant tape around the joint.

My headers made a lot of noise for 1-2 weeks after I had them in. I was pretty well convinced that I had some leaks, but I could not feel anything, and everything was nice and tight and with new header to head gaskets.

For whatever reason, the noise just up and left. The system is nearly as quiet as stock now. You can hear a little "piffing", but it's not a leak - it's the exhaust gasses in the primaries. Definitely not louder than stock in the cab, until you get on the throttle. You'd be hard pressed to "hear" that I had headers at idle, unless you knew what you were listening for.

So that Dynatech system performs like it should for the price? That is good to know, it is definitely an impressive looking system. Too bad it isn't CARB approved... :sigh:

I had the same problem with my GTO years ago, so I know what you mean. It seems like header manufacturers are making them with more precision than they used to. At least the TOGs look that way. I think that's what I'll use.

Yeah, I bought mine used for ~800 - I would have paid the full 1,100.

The gains are VERY noticeable, especially with the few other mods I had in there at the time.

I hear you about the CARB thing. I'm hoping nobody that "cares", notices. I really don't feel like pulling that whole thing back out again to get my inspection sticker.
