2xtreme
I have been juggling the thought of trading in my 03 Durango R/T in on a SS My wife and I are having a kid in Nov. and I was wondering how practicle the SS would be compared to the durango toting the kid, and all the goodies around with us??? Any suggestions or first hand experiance out there???
luvmySS
I don't have any kids, but I do have three dogs and they can be quite a load just by themselves. I also have a band and we load up a lot of P.A. gear, speakers, amps, guitars, etc with room to spare. I would say go for it cuz there is plenty of room in the backseat for kids, goodies, etc. no problems that I can see.
schklege
Well, I have three kids, one Silverado SS, and one Dodge Caravan. Guess which vehicle gets used virtually every time the whole family goes? The rear seat of the SS is for part time use only. Besides--no food in the truck, no feet on the seats, no fingers on the windows--gets kind of old after a while.
MilleniumSS03
I think the only thing you would really need to worry about is the possible spills and mess that come along with a baby. Other than that, just slap a tonneau cover on the bed and you got your cargo space just as you do in the Durango. Cool dad in the SS sounds a little cooler than Cool dad in the SUV. That is just my opinion. My mother replaced her Silverado with a Trailblazer to tote around the grandkids and now she wants a truck again. It is all just a matter of preference. There are somethings you will be able to do with each vehicle that the other wont. Good luck!

ChevelleBoy
Get mom a Z71 Suburban to haul the kids and an SS for dad to be cool and haul the kids every now and then! That's what I did and it's a great combo. We have two kids (2 yrs and 8mos) and my wife, who swore she would never drive anything as big as a suburban would now not give it up to save her life - she loves it to haul the kids and kids stuff around. I had an SS454 when we bought the Suburban back in '01 and just got the Silverado SS a couple months ago, so the timing worked out great. I can't say enough about the suburban for the wife and kids. Krambo
2extreme - An SS will get you to the hospital quicker on delivery day. I like your thinking lee It did in my case! My daughter was born on May 7th. Had the heated seats on full blast the whole way for her. Really makes a statement ripping up in front of the E-room in an SS! To answer your question: We have a 02 Blazer for the daily bump and grind however I did mount a baby seat (posted a thread a while back) wich actually looks good. The color matches perfect! Anyway, If I want to drive with my daughter, wife and SS it had to happen. Don't regret it one bit! The 4 doors are really handy and there is almost no way for the kids to get in too much trouble in the back of an extended cab truck (i.e. opening the doors while driving). SS can't be beat IMO. Now, ...food in the truck for the kids is a different story
schklege
Krambo makes a good point about the rear seat being a safe haven for kids, and the four doors are handy compared to two doors, but I find them a pain in a parking lot when getting kids in and out. I honestly believe you will regret having the SS as your only vehicle, 2xtreme, if you are planning for kid/s. Let me put it this way--I actually prefer to drive my minivan when I have the family--and there's few things I love more than driving my SS. By the way, ChevelleBoy, could you have your wife counsel my wife about the Suburban idea? She doesn't want the big vehicle either.
zippy
i'd be leaning more toward the suv, but trailblazer ext or buick rainer with the 5.3. the r/t isn't bad, but old technology and terrible fuel milage. the suv will offer more room as well as an available factory dvd player which movies and kids go hand in hand. TedG
I got the wifey an Escalade to haul the family around in. But the extended cab really makes this a useful truck.

reverbtank
Well, 2xtreme...I should be working now, but started creeping around the forum and wanted to reply real quick. I've got a 9 month old in a rear-facing convertible car seat, and it works just fine. I'm 6'3", and I still fit with the seat in there. Can't put my seat back as far as I might like, but this set up is comfortable and safe for both of us. Once he gets to 20 lbs, we'll turn the seat around, and give all of us more room. The LATCH system in the middle of the rear seat is a great thing as well. Once he is facing forward, he will be like "THE CAPTAIN" back there. Heh. Hope this helps... 2xtreme
Well I think we are going to stick w/ the durango for now, the trade in value on it is about $10,000 under what we owe on it . It sucks we are getting a killer deal on a SS but the rollover is killing me . It's sickening we purchased the durango in jan. of this year and only has 3400 miles on it. Oh well maby something will come up later on down the line.
