1-NICE-SS
I just put new wheels and tires on my SS last night, and now it feels a little slower. I might be dreaming, but I was wondering if anyone else noticed a differance with a wheel change. I put 20inch American Racing RT-S's on with Toyo Proxes. I did put a bigger size on, 285/50/20's, from what I found these should be about the same overal diameter but a little wider. Thanks for any help. orion :: SS
More rotational mass (weight) soaks up more power...so less is available to make the truck move fast. I'll bet these are significantly heavier than your stock wheel/tire combo? A few extra lbs really makes a BIG difference. - Brian
1-NICE-SS
My new wheels are still 20's just bigger tires. Do you think that one size bigger will make that much differance?
04CHASE
its more the weigh tof your rims, rotating weight takes more of a toll on your accleration than it does when hauling the same weight, i would weigh a stock rim and tire and then weigh the new ones, i bet you the new ones are heavier, the tire may have a little to do with that also
smkdu
the difference is barely noticeable I have 305/50/R20 on my truck right now and it still responds pretty much the same, but they grip a heck of a lot better then the stock ones did, and the directional treads make it look even more bad a$$. JMO but I don't think it makes that big of a difference, drive and find out good luck
smkdu
didn't read the part about new rims. Are if they're steel or chrome they will slow you down a bit, forged or aluminum is the way to go they are usually the lightest rims. Bet they look good though

smkdu
Are they 20x8 or 20x8.5 or 20x9? If they are 20x8 the same as stock there should be no difference really.B/c like in my previous post I have the 305/50/R20 on mine which are even wider than the ones you dropped no your ride and I didn't feel anything but more of a grip . I just like the way they make the truck look, makes me feel like even more
ChevySSandChevy8.1
stock SS rim with tire is 78 lbs, weight the overall package, most likely its heavier. Although the SS 20 inch rims are quite heavy to start with compared with the aftermarket brands. Even some 22s with tires are lighter than stock. 1-NICE-SS
I think that they must be pretty close in weight, but my new tires bigger. That's why I think it felt differant. Either way they look pretty and that's what really matters.

You'd think that they'd use something lighter to make the truck faster. But I really like the way the 305/50 fill out the wheel wells though, they look a lot nicer on the truck that's for sure. So the weight of the rim is probably to make sure it can withstand the strain. But then again I could be wrong.
smkdu
I thought that with a 20 inch wheel that you were not supposed to tow anything b/c of the whole not much sidewall protection deal. That's why all the standard Silverado's come with 16 inch 265/75 and the reenforced sidewall along with the HD 245/75 with the 10 ply sidewall. Just wondering about it that's all b/c I was told that the 20's tend to blow out.
RacerJJ
Sounds like you have the same wheels as me except mine are 22's. I have run my quickest 1/4 mile time ever with my 22's because they are shorter than stock overall and they weigh slightly less. Don't know what happened with your set-up? Depends on the tire and the rim. I'm pretty sure GM designed the 20 inch rim with tire to withstand the towing capability of the truck.
