1-NICE-SS
I'm was thinking about installing some electric fans on my SS. But I was wondering if they're worth the money. I should get a little more milage and performance. But what kind of performance can I expect to see or what have you guys seen? Any help would be great, thanks. j4nash
the only reason i put some in was that i will need the space for the S/C. i say if you don't need the space spend your money on something else like a tune, intake, headers or maybe a muffler. any of these would be better money spent. 1-NICE-SS
My truck already has a tune, muffler and intake. I'm looking for something else to add besides a s/c. So you would put headers on before the fans?
j4nash
yes, I went with the TOG's. i am very happy with them. headers will cost a little more then e-fans, but the gains from e-fans will be like 5hp to the ground if that. but the gains from headers will be like 20 hp to the ground. pluse they also make the truck sound better. 1-NICE-SS
Don't the factory manifolds flowed really well? Are your headers long tubes? I saw that Gibson makes shorty headers that are stainless steel. I have nickel coated headers on my Camaro. But being that I will have to drive the SS year round Stainless headers would be a better choice for me.
j4nash
the factory manifolds do flow good and that is why it would be a was of money to buy shorty headers. IF you are going to do headers get either long tube or mid length like the TOGS's
j4nash
you could do a mild cam for the price of E-fans
PewterC3
I added '05 efans and a re-tune (hotter) to control them. My truck runs faster now with the A/C on then before with it off....and no more fan clutch kicking in during the summer to make noise and rob power.....I'm happy! SSLink
E-fans are nice and reduce parasitic losses but a lot of folks here on the board are having reliability issues with them and overheating. Be careful on the install. As for bang for the bucks, I thing a higher stall converter or a cam would give you a lot more performance for about the same cost and amount of labor. I may get e-fans eventually but it's tough for me to get too excited about 2 or 3 rwhp, at least until I have exhausted the more productive possibilities. Even an underdrive pulley will free up more horses than e-fans, although it will work even better along with them. ;)
haynss
do the fans, cam, headers, TC, heads, and shift kit
PewterC3
I think the overheating issues have been related to the VSC? I run them off the PCM. I don't think I would put power pulley's on with the e-fans....it appears to me the alternator needs all the rpm it can get to provide the extra juice at idle to run both efans... plus the normal draw. In fact...I'm sure I'll be adding an Optima battery soon!

It really doesn't slow the alternator down enough to make much difference in juice. However, I agree that I would not go with an additional alternator pulley to slow it down further. That would be pushing it with the fans, stereo. headlights and power windows all operating at the same time. An underdrive crank pulley usually dynos a gain of 8-12 rwhp, mostly from slowing the water pump. It's a pretty good mod, easily installed. 1-NICE-SS
What do you guys think about the long tube header idea? I think I'm writing off the fans for now. I'm not sure how excited I am about swapping the cam or converter. I've swapped converter and cam on my Camaro a couple of times and that wasn't much fun. Maybe I should just wait until I'm ready for the s/c.

Your choice of the ideal cam and converter on the other hand will vary depending on whether or not you have a blower or what kind you eventually get.
