TurbochargedBerserker
On the way home today, my truck started smoking -- a little a first and then great gouts of white smoke. Well, I thought I must've blown the head gasket or lifted a head, or something... Here's the weird part: No water in the oil, no oil in the water, no decrease in oil or water level... I started it back up and ran it a little and the temp stayed dead on 178* (normal op temp for me). So I drove it a little... Still no mixed fluids, no decrease in levels, no extra noises, no increase in any temps (hell even the iats stayed 10 over ambient!), but as it drove, the engine roughened up like it was developing a miss, and eventually got really rough. The white smoke would stop and be replaced by a little blue smoke, then more white, then a little blue, etc. Finally it stopped altogether (although was still running rough), until I was about 2 blocks from home, and voila, more white smoke, followed by blue, then nothing again. At home I checked the oil and water again: nothing. Checked the tranny fluid: nothing. I looked all around the heads, no signs of leaking oil or water, no outward sign of a lifted head, nothing. Engine compartment is totally dry as is the air intake tube up by the TB. The fluids don't even smell funny... I haven't pulled the plugs yet, but I'm already stumped anyway... Any idea what the hell could be going on now? Oh -- oil pressure ranged from 40 to the big has mark below 40 on the stock gauge. I had the wrong logging profile on the laptop and didn't think to change it to see the actual oil pressure. Also -- no codes, nothing amiss in either scanner (HPT and megasquirt). Nada... misterp
Man that's a pisser - not sure but sounds like oil in the combustion chamber to me, you may have no option but to inspect the plugs for more clues... Mr. P.
smithl3
Well, for the sake of mentioning it, I know you've been through your motor lots of times. When mine was re-done it had positive seal rings put in it, but in converting to Mobil 1 too soon I think I never gave them time to break in and I had a similar smoking problem. I know it isn't what you want to hear but if it is burning oil it would be rings or valve/valve seals. Is the motor even broken in turbo?? Good luck man I am hopeful for you. BenKey
What all was done again? I'm not good at diagnosing, but initially, it sounds like more happened than thought from the mal-adjusted rockers.
zippy
just a simple thought, you may have oil getting to the exhaust side of the turbo. if that's the case it'll never make it up to the intake, but it will get hot enough to smoke and make it out the tailpipe. TurbochargedBerserker
I guess it could be a ring / landing or the like, but the steam confuses me. Plus there is no decrease in the oil level... And it was a lot of smoke -- I've blown head gaskets before and that's exactly what it looked like -- big clouds of white smoke. All they did the last time was put the roller rockers on the drivers side, adjust them, and try to start it for the final adjustment -- it was holding the valves open and was clear that the pushrods were too long so they took them off and put on the stockers. They didn't go any deeper than the valve covers. I'm going to pull the plugs later tonight or tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to find fouled plugs on the passenger side. I'm wondering if there is a tear in the head gasket and it's just too small to loose a lot of water or heat up.

I did bypass the dual speed thing this afternoon when I first saw the smoke, but it made no difference. I guess the buzzer and the pump could both be shorted, but that wouldn't explain the rough running.
hellbents10
Some white smoke might be ok. Also I agree with Zippy look before and after the turbo as far as exhaust goes. What size ffed line do you ahve to the turbo? any restrictors? Size going back to the motor? is the oil return pump runing properly? enough voltage to it? Look at the plugs. This will tell you if its motor or turbo related. You might get some oil up the intake tube if its the turbo but it will take a while.
hellbents10
Pull your air intake tubing and look for oil as it wil cause the ruff runing.
hellbents10
ALso I see you hade a broken shaft a while back on your rockers. Could be head damage from that too.
TurbochargedBerserker
THANK GOD!! Tranny fluid... I guess I sucked some tranny fluid through the check valve and into the vacuum system. I found a wet plug (#8?? rear passenger), but its wet with gas. The other passenger side plugs are dry (and brown). The first ds plug also dry & brown, and I spotted the tranny fluid after I started on the second. I haven't pulled anymore plugs. I talked to Chuck at FLT and it's probable that I blew out the vacuum pump when I hit boost today (We think Chuck & Paul at All Pro ignored the new check valve Chuck J sent down to be installed ) The systems I described are exactly what Chuck would expect for sucking tranny fluid back up into the intake. At least I probably didn't hurt the motor... I will probably pull the rest of the plugs tonight or tomorrow just to be sure.
