r8rs4lf Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 According to the installation intructions on the Carriage Works part#42042 (3 piece), it says it's possible to keep the front plate mount. Why have some people said that they needed to remove the front plate mount? I'm doing some research right now for a billet grill, need some help! TIA Here are the installation intructions
Wizard Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 I never put mine back on. But it looks as if the back lower piece of the mount needs to be trimmed to fit. Wiz
Stitches040 Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Hey there r8rs4lf ... I have this exact Billet Grille ... The reason for removal of the front plate bracket, is that the bracket fits flush, up against the lower "Honeycomb" plastic grill. So, you must remove it, to install the bolt-over grill. Then, as the instructions state, cut about 1/4" off the back of the license plate bracket, so now it will fit flush up against the new Billet Grille. Then re-install the bracket. Since it is Bolt Over style, you have to account for adding a 1/4" (or so) to the overall width of lower section. (So once you put your bracket back on, it will mount in the same location, but you have the new grill in the way.) I hope this makes sence to you. If not, PM me ... I'm working Midnights tonight, and I can call you ....
brobradh77 Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 Yeah I just installed my bolt over billet grill from stylin concepts and I had to trim about 3/4 -1" off the bottom to be able to remount it to my bumber.

Just be careful when you cut it I am sure others have a btter idea on how to do it than me but I used my sawsall god I love that thing . I cut through it like butter but I didnt think about putting a towel or something on the ground first before I started and the vibration of the saw caused me to scuff up my liscense plate holder . The instructions say 3/4" but I found I had to trim a little more off. Just trial and error and take a little bit off at a time.
Stitches040 Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 Is there any way to mount that lower without the factory "honeycomb?" I'd like to cut that out if possible. Nope ... Don't think so, becuase it is a Bolt Over ... It's due to the spring loaded "Butterfly" bolts that it comes with. The bolt goes through the grille, then the Honeycomb. On the backside of the honeycomb is where you attach that Wingnut/butterfly. Once you tighten, the grille is on the honeycomb and the wingnut attaches the pressure to the backside of the Honeycomb. So .... Nope ...

If I can move them, then I could cut some of it out right? No ... Each piece of the grill has two to four pre mounted bolt holes, already fabricated. They are attached to the ribs/frame of the grill. So the Butterfly Wingnut only spreads out over a couple of the honeycomb, that' what it has to grab, in order for it to stay inplace. check out Step 1 in the instructions link you posed. That is what I mean ... I have a spare grille insert ... I'll post some pics .... hopefully tonight
JF-03-SS Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 Trenz lower grill replaces the factory grill but you still have to cut the back of the plate bracket. Just a FYI
r8rs4lf Posted December 14, 2006 Author Report Posted December 14, 2006 Well I finally ordered a grill. I've stayed away from a grill this long because I haven't seen one I like. I only ordered the upper and lower grills, no brake ducts. I think the brake ducts are a little much for my taste.
Generalms02 Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 The lower grille piece that I got replaced the factory grille. It used the stock plactic pins and stock holes to attach.

Stitches040 Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 BTW r8rs4lf ... definetly paint the factory grill a Flat Black ... Since it is a dark grey, on bright sunny days, you can see it through the Billet Grille ... The Flat Black helps to hide the original grille. Here's a couple of pics of the Carriage Works ... 5 piece
