NoLegs
I wanted to invest in some aftermarket performance parts, but am concerned with my transmission and wanted get straight on THAT issue before I increase HP/TQ. Pretty much I want to solve a transmission problem before I have one. And all the horror stories I keep reading has just got me all paranoid. Trying to keep the message short and to the point: 1) I want to do a CAI kit. I'm not loyal to any brand, so I'd probably go with K&N, but again, it doesn't matter. 2) CAT back. I've had my eye on the Corsa Cat Back (P/N 14279), but if I need to skim on some items due to cash flow, I'd just go with dual Flowmaster 40's or possibly a 50. Again, I'm not loyal to any one brand, just want a more agressive sound. 3) POSSIBLY Headers, but more than likely just the cat back. Was interested in Bassani's 531500SS. THE ABOVE is the extent of performance mods I want to do and realistically, the headers probably won't happen from the get go, but maybe down the road somewhere. Now that I've given you my list of performance mods (albeit minial), I need suggestions on how to get the most out of my trannsmission to benefit from my list. I know I'll need a tune, but know nothing about this process and there seems to be some mixed opinions on handhelds vs. sending the PCM (ie doing a swap). So questions 4, 5, & 6: 4) What should I do to the transmission for reliability? I like a clean crisp shift. 5) I was looking at Superchips handheld model P/N 2815, but will entertain ANY other suggestions if I'm barking up the wrong tree. Goal here is to NOT backout the timing during shifts. 6) I'm still not clear on whether Torque Management should be disabled or not. Seeing how I am in Rapid City, SD...I don't have alot of "local" options to deal with, but am more than able to do all this work in my garage (including the transmission granted it doesn't require complete teardown - valvebody, no problem). I guess it would help if everyone knew how I drive the truck too: 1) Doubt I'll every put it on a race track. 2) Lead foot...sometimes 3) Don't haul or tow, but wouldn't want to eliminate those options either. Truck is a bone stock '03 SSS with 19000 miles and NO signs or indications of a failing transmission/differentials, etc. Thanks a bunch! Also, I e-mailed zippy via his website asking pretty much the same questions and asking for a suggestion on one of his shift kits, but recently read his post about being swamped lately (which is totally understandable and I don't have any ill feelings if he can't respond for a few days).
