1 Fast SS
I've got a Volant with a custom ram air, but I've been hearing about the Outlaw being the best for our trucks, or at least bringing in more air. But sometimes, bringing in more air, doesn't mean better. So which one should be the best? I would like to see some dyno numbers if you guys have them. Everyone will have their preference. I've done alot of research, but they all claim to have e best numbers. I have also heard that the metal or stainless tubed ones get hotter which makes the air hotter. The plastic ones are much cooler, thats why I chose the Volant, plus its a closed unit, which gives you more lowend torque. What do you think? montanass
K&N is a little over rated IMO. IMO they are no better than the others, they've just got the name. Dont get me wrong, they've got a great product, but there are better systems out there for GM trucks than what they offer. If I could do it all over again I would purchase the Outlaw, but the Volant looks better and doesn't fall too short of the Outlaw.
2006_superado
i've got the volant as well. i did a lot of research before i bought it, and from what i gathered it was a split decision between the outlaw/volant. as for performance they both had the making of a good cai.. closed box (no hot underhood air), plastic tube (won't heat up like metal), and a proven track record with everyone on here (many of whom tried others and compared). what made me decide on the volant was, larger air box then the outlaw (just makes common sense that it would support more airflow imo), has a pre-existing fitting to attach a ram-air tube, and finaly it just looks better. i got mine for $250.00 which is the cheapest i seen for a new one. the outlaw go's for the same, although i have seen them as low as $199.00 once in a while. so at the most i paid $50.00 more over the outlaw, well worth it to me... but if you don't care about the things that i prefered about the volant, then the outlaw shoold perform just as well. rivierakid55
when i was choosing mine it came down to the two most popular. the volant or the outlaw. basically i just flipped a coin at that point. i will say that the new gmpp kit is a really nice looking setup too. torqueaholic
Here are some dynos that came from gmfullsize.com but are gone from this server for some reason. They were originally posted by Dylan06 and 04Chase from their testing at the Outlaw Power facility. ssaman
Whats the story on Airaid? any good? I've heard a few people talk about it but never sang its praises or talked about its down falls.
Porno Joe
I was thinking about something regarding the testing of these intakes. As far as the volant with the ram air tube upgrade, wouldnt the best way to test the gains of that be on the road. To achieve the full "ram" effects, wouldn't you have to be forcing cold air into the air box from the bumper, not sucking it thru while the truck is sitting on the dyno? just my .02. I have the volant with the ram air tube and i am completely happy with it
drako
There was a guy here who was a engineer and gave some insight on the cold air vs open element intakes. Very intresting read. He was a pretty smart guy too bad hes not in here do a search on cold air intakes or outlaw he should come up. Again I am partial to outlaw due to thier incredible customer service. And yeah K&N aint all that
Fireman31
I am completely satisfied with my K&N, there has to be someone here who agrees with me. In no way am I saying that they are the absolute best, I am not doubting that maybe the Volant or Outlaw are better, but K&N does make a damn good CAI. I know for a fact that there are several members here who have it, I wonder what their opinions of th K&N are. Lets hear it.
12'SROCK
You should look into the AEM brute force dry flow system. Its pretty nice.
VMaxDenali
When I was doing my research K&N's tech support engineer helped me decide.....I was considering the K&N with an aluminum intake tube, the engineer said don't do it stick with plactic....I asked about the open element vs a box and the K&N engineer said the factory box was better than an open element because it is a true CAI. I went with the Outlaw and have been completely satisfied......didn't notice any "seat of the pants" gains nor was there any increase in noise level....but I feel better that my wallet is lighter and I can tell my buddies it has an Outlaw CAI!!!!!
