Moving cross country

Just curious if and how many of you who moved across the country did it? The end of May I am moving out to AZ from Pa and not to sure how to approach the move of my things. I have a decent amount of crap that has to come with me so just seeing how anyone else has done it. Not to sure if I want to rent a big ass trailer and stuff it full of stuff and make the drive. Are there trucking company's that will take my truck, and all my other crap out together at once?

ANy info on companies, etc would be good

My ex moved from new jersey to Miami, she had a moving company take everything from the yukon to the kitchen sink. Look around your area, if I were you I would take the opportunity to maybe see a bit of the USA. But I like the road trip idea....

I've got experience unfortunately, lived everywhere between Oregon & Texas so many moves, most UHaul, a couple couple professional relocations.

First thing you need to know, as you are moving greater than 600-miles save all your receipts because the whole shebang is tax deductible, you'll get like 1/3rd of it back off your taxes this year.

All decisions depend on how much stuff you have to move. It's been years now but I want to say that moving my family from Austin to Albuquerque cost a few grand by the time all was said & done, that was the largest move that I personally did but we rented the largest UHaul truck + largest Ryder trailer + car trailer - we had a ton of shit. If all you have to move is just your bed and a dresser then I would say to sell the large furniture locally (so you don't have to rent a large trailer) and then purchase replacements in Phoenix when you get there. Point is lighten your load as much as possible, sell everything but your trade tools & personals & sentimental items, you might be able to just throw it all in your truck & drive out. Or be able to rent a smaller trailer & the fuel bill will be less.

As an alternative, you can hire a moving van to get your stuff and truck it to Phx for you; the driver will usually get contents from several other homeowners as well to make a full van load and economize - this could be a viable option for you but you'll have to be able to provide a preliminary box count/cu. ft./tonnage so that an estimate can be drawn up.

The most expensive move was my trip to Austin, Dell had to pay movers to haul my Firebird and garge tools from CA to Austin, plus separately move our stuff from Phx to Austin (we lived in Ahwatukee at the time) plus airfare for the family plus hiring a car carrier to deliver my pickup from Phx to Austin. By the time all was said and done that relocation cost Dell $43,000; if I had known that I would have sold almost everything we owned (except the Firebird :D) and taken the relocation money in cash and moved us myself.

Food for thought.

Mr. P.

I have a decent amount of stuff but the main thing is the larger items. I would prob leave my dressers home and purchase new once out there. But going from Pa to AZ the main things coming with me is all my dirt bikes and ATV's, there is no way in hell i will sell them before hand then buy something once out in AZ due to the price comparison. I'm guessing I could prob rent a big enough trailer and load it up with majority of my stuff and make the drive but damn thats a far drive, especially when I cant be doing 90mph most of the way out. I guess I will be looking into a trailer to pull but just wasnt sure about a moving company itself. I didnt really know how much something like a company would cost for them to move everything out. I figured renting a trailer big enough, plus gas would add up a good amount and might just be less of a hassle if someone else did it. I guess I really have some researching to do on this matter

I have moved a couple times with both Uhaul and Penske... they both run about the same price but Penske's truck are always a lot more reliable and have a LOT less miles. Penske has to replace their trucks every 3 or 4 years, Uhaul keeps them till they die

well to rent an enclosed trailer it will cost me at least a $1000, and thats not even for one all that big. Looks like I might just buy an enclosed trailer, make the move and keep the trailer for my dune trips with the bikes and ATV's when time comes in the future. I dont see spending a $1000 just for something I will use once just to give it back to the supplier. For about a $1000 more I can find a bigger trailer that I can keep for myself so why not

My mother just moved down to florida from maine. I got her a pod. they come and drop it in your yard, u load it and they come pick it up with a truck and move it for u. The cost isn't bad at all for me it was 425 maine to florida, u may want to check into that.

that doesnt sound to bad of a price but I would still need to drive my truck out to AZ and if I'm gonna drive I might as well take my crap with me so I know where it is as all times

So your moving out here to the "but it's a dry heat" state huh??? Thats cool, you need to let me know when you get here, maybe we can meet up some time. As for the moving, I've done alot of lon moves but the Navy has always set up and moved for me so...I can't help you with that.

i was waiting for someone to suggest penske. we do like to keep em new. "buy new, maintain new, sell new". i've been with them for 5 years. good trucks and 24 hour assistance with over 25,000 nationwide roadside vendors. downside is our car carries can't support our trucks and we don't have enclosed trailers. we do have 10', 16', 20' and 26' box trucks. im on the maintenance side of penske so as far as rental stuff goes i wouldn't know that much.

moving is a lil differnt for military members, i will say that i dont think since iv joined that i have been in one house more than 8 months. I have moved houses and states and unfortunatly got a couple trips to a country that just smells bad. Best advice i could give you is that the more you move the less you pay somebody else. Depending how they are charing you. But you gotta figure in how much you will spend in gas if you drive out. I personally will be drivin from ak to my next base but will be stopping in wv. I move in sept maybe i see some of you guys on the road on my cross country trip

since your moving to az you can go the car show in havisu at the end of april

Wont be out there till end of May, which comes after April :banghead:

Some people are already giving me the dry heat speech here locally asking why the hell I would go out there. I was out there at the end of summer last year and I would rather deal with the 115 degree temps than the 90+ here with full humidity. Wish it was sooner but gotta make sure everything is in order first.
