I E-mailed a local speed shop about a shift kit and tune estimate, and this is what I got:

Trans Go Shift Kit $129.99

Transmission Filter Kit $39.99

Fluid $30.00

Upgraded Servo $40.00

Installation Labor @$70.00 4Hrs $280.00

All Prices do not include Tax.

For the tune we have 2 options to choose from. You can choose an SCT Tune with an Xcal 2 tune device that will offer 3 tune files for you to choose from for $399.00 plus 1.5 hour of tune time. The benefit of the SCT would be we can put 3 tunes in the device with different shift points on each tune and then you can decide which you like best.

Option 2 would be HP Tuners for $250.00 plus 1.5 hours of tune time. You will have just one tune flashed to the ECU and that is it. All tunes are 100% supported, shift points can always be adjusted free of charge.

We will tune the truck on the Dyno, we should be able to pick up some power and torque, but most of all possibly fuel economy.

Sound decent to you guys? Basically its in the $500 range for shift kit / installation + tax. If I go with the HP tuners option the total should be $874.98 + tax. Its a very reputable shop, they handle dyno / tuning, FI, tranny, suspension, and exhaust. Most of the vehicles they work on are Mustangs and F Bodies. My truck would probobly the lamest vehicle they've worked on :yellow_loser::lol:

I think these price quotes are equitable, not cheap but not outrageous either; I would go with the HPT dyno tune. If these folks have done quite a bit of f-body work and have good local rep (customers don't have a bunch of broken parts) then I say it looks good.

im not sure about ohio but in california at least in the bay area thats pretty right on. i havent seen anyone around here do a dyno tune for less than $500.00 and 4 hours is about what my trans guy would charge.

are you going to upgrade your tc at the same time? you might get a little break on the labor even though the shift kit and tc really share no labor operations.

:withstupid: Very good thinking - if you can swing another couple hundred bucks I would do the TBTC at the same time, and put off the dyno tune for later as you already have the W4M tune...

Im still looking at TC's. I was under the impression if I had a shift kit installed and still ran the same shifting from the tune it would grenade the tranny, I think I read it on here too. If I dont have to get it retuned I guess I'll get a TC.

not sure about that one. i had the shift kit done prior to any tuning since that was recommended by most on the forum.

Sorry if I contributed to any confusion on this point - the short story is that if you install a shift kit & servos the PCM will in time notice the more responsive behavior of the tranny and begin to adapt, trying to deliver the original soft shift it came with from the factory. Meaning, it'll shift as intended for the first 100-miles and then soften back to "normal". So no, it's not going to break anything but you will want the transmission parameters optimized in your PCM tune to get the best out of the combination. So get the shift kit & converter first, then have the tune done. You might also want to call W4M first and discuss his tune, it might already be set for these kinds of mods? I dunno but I would check to make sure exactly what is in your existing tune.
