Gas is going up and I'm not wanting to pay for premium fuel for my truck. My questions is can i run 89 octane without worries or should i just suck it up and put 91 in. I usually put in 91 or 93 octane. I won't even consider 87 but i figure 89 would be ok but id rather ask than make a full tank mistake lol. Thanx

its not even worth chancing the motor with lower octane. if you can afford 93 octane might as well get rid of truck. cause the difference is only around 5 bucks for a full tank

I have always heard the mid range octane is actually better because the higher octane is not used much and usually old and just not as good..it just sits in the tanks and no telling whats in some of those tanks..i wear gloves and air mask when going in the bathrooms

lower octane fuel :nono:

The LQ9 in our SSSs have 10:1 compression, running anything lower than 91 is stupid. :shakehead:

Lower octane = detonation and pinging = knock retard = lower fuel economy and less power

:chevy:

I ran 87 in my truck for about 2 years until I put a whipple on it, now all I run is 93 octane. It would spark knock with the 87 octane under hard acceleration or with a load. Under normal driving conditions, the computer would pull enough timing and it never really pinged. I would fill it up with 93 octane if I knew I was going to the track or if I was planning on pulling a trailer. I can tell you one thing, the difference between the two fuels is huge. I ran my buddy's completely bone stock SS with 93 octane against my truck with 87 octane, a CAI, Cat-Back, E-Fans, Throttle Body Spacer and Coolant By-Pass and his truck was a full truck length faster. I may have saved $300 a year by running 87 octane, but the performance loss is not worth it.
