srtSSsvt121
I wanted to powder coat the stock rims black on the SS i was just wondering if anyone has done this or has pictures. Also if it matters if they arent the chrome ones. thanks for the feedback! Edited May 19, 2007 by srtSSsvt121 (see edit history)
packjh
yea, somebody had theirs painted or powder coated when i first joined but i think he has sold his truck since. He had left the small circle in the center of the wheel cap chrome. Im not sure on the chrome part as i just read something that says you cant do chrome but should search the web under powdercoating and find out. Spoolin
I'm gonna be painting a pair at the end of the month. I bought them off a member on here Mr.P. (awesome guy to deal with). Pair I bought were OEM silver painted 20". I know through research that if you want to paint a chrome set of rims you have to strip the chrome off. You can just paint over it but it won't last long and it will end up looking bad. If you have a chrome set see if you can't trade someone with a painted set or look at getting them stripped which can get $$. If I remember I'll post picks of when I get them painted, they are gonna be black or maybe carbon metallic to match my truck but I'm not sure yet, still debating. Hope this helps. - J
r8rs4lf
People have done it, but I think the problem they run into are the center caps. They are plastic and will not take the heat from powdercoating and if they are left chrome or silver on a black powdercoated rim, they look like ! Black2003SS
Or you could just run with the center cap off and get some nice brass lug nuts or something. Didn't one member run with the center caps off? If you go flat black though, it shouldnt be to hard to duplicate, maybe a shade or two off, its the other colors that are harder to match, like gunmetal, titanium, and lighter shades of black. Krambo
Powdercoated stock SS wheels Black powdercoated SS wheels 2 I did it a while back for a different look, sold them a while back. The guy i sold them to just sold them for $700 with the tires. Krylon Fusion (the plastic paint) was good for the centercaps. Post pics when you are done! Now I've got that idea in my head... My buddy painted the rims on his WRX and came out okay but they scratch real easily and seem really cheesy up close... Somebody should post a powdercoating-your-rims how-to....
Black2003SS
Thats pretty well matched Krambo, what did you pay to have that done or did you do it yourself? Edited May 19, 2007 by Black2003SS (see edit history)
Prestoar
I checked into this just a few weeks ago and a local shop wanted 80 per tire for 80% gloss....the stock wheels come with a powder coat from factory and they must strip that first and the center caps can't be touched because like others have said..they are not metal. This price included no prep work...they do no prep..I must bring in the wheels without anything else. I passed
packjh
ah just got ahold of my friend even if you have chrome they can be powdercoated. THe chrome just has to be bead blasted off first. Which they usually do with anything you get powder coated anyway
Spoolin
A guy I spoke to about widening wheels also mentioned that if you want to color match your rims you should look into getting them painted and not powdercoated. He said because of the extreme heat used in the powdercoating method that it weakens the rim. I don't know how accurate this information was but he seemed to be credible and worked on rims for a living anyways. Just a thought.

The curing time in the oven is time and temperature dependant. I have seen wheels PC and cured in a UV oven at 250* for less than 10 minutes. Break temperatures during spirited driving reach much higher temps than that. Painting is o.k. but the toughness of powdercoating is fantastic. If you have the chrome wheels, you can do a translucent powdercoat that mimics black chrome. Shop around, there are many places that will prep and powdercoat for a reasonable price. A shop by be charges $40 a wheel (up to 20") to powdercoat and another $50 if you want them to prep the wheel.
Spoolin
Thanks Krambo, I'm still on the fence as to if I should widen my rims now or later. I'd like to PC them now and widen them later but not sure if PC will make the widening harder later. It's possible that the guy I spoke with was referring to the weld or band that he adds in order to widen the rim, maybe that's what he says gets weaker. Not sure. Were yours painted or PC'ed? Krambo
Were yours painted or PC'ed? Powdercoated. They were bullitproof. I would like to widen my 99 16" Silvy wheels so they will fit a nice fat DR. Keep us posted on that venture!
