fast4popper
So everyone wants new wheels, so do I!!, but I have a thought. I really like the stying of our wheels on our trucks. so I was thinking as I was reading thru some old posts about powdercoating. does anyone know if our wheels can be blasted and then dipped in a black chrome? you know, just a lil tint of black to set them off from the flash of chrome. has this been done? any pics? its just a thought. i would LOVE 22's but that will slow me down in speed, it would be a expensive outta my pocket. where as i know this wont be cheep, but it would be different. yet still "stock" anyone have anything here for me? thanks
misterp
I have been told that the painted stock wheels can be stipped and powder coated; the chromed stock ones apparently cannot. Mr. P.

kaotik1
Yes the wheels can be stripped. Yes they can be dipped. Black chrome has two major problems. One very hard to achieve, and two very pricey. I coated a wheel in a two-stage black chrome because that is a color I really like and want. I posted pictures of it and the majority of people said the same thing, "It looks like a stock wheel, really dirty.." I will try to dig back and find the pictures. If you still have my number feel free to call me I will let you know about this color, aside of it being a bitch to do.

fast4popper
I like the color, but 2 questions. can you add more shine to it?? also what would you do about the center caps? can they be treated the same way? I guess question 3 would be, Price for a set of 4? also one other thing, I saw on a Polk Audio Demo car where they powdercoated the back lip of the wheel to match the car, I think It just set it of nicely. could that be done too? I am just full of questions..

I don't think they'd survive very well... For the look you're going for, I would actually choose paint over powder coating. Much easier to apply and easier to control the outcome for a high shine finish. Here's one called Hyperblack http://www.innate.com/Paint/Chrome/HyperBlack.htm that looks like a shiney black chrome mirror. Several coats of automotive clear over that system to protect them a little better (I would imagine that you'd need some extra clear anyway) and you'd be set. This is the color I've been thinking about for my L76 intake manifold...

I am just full of questions.. For more shine I could add clear coat over the top of it all. Center caps are plastic, and would have to be painted to match this can be done about anywhere. So I guess what you are asking is to have the inside taped off and coated red while the front face is black chrome?? That would probably cost more than you would want. That would be four colors, Chrome base, Black Chrome top coat, tape off then red inside, and clear. The cost to do black chrome is 150 per wheel. The center caps are plastic and would melt at the 400+ degree temps needed to flow out the powder coating (some powder require closer to 500 degree flow out temps). I for sure feel this is the way to go for the color, it looks the way it is suppose to as well as the center caps can be done to match. SS_bnoon_SS
...as well as the center caps can be done to match. As could the exhaust tip, grills, or any other accent piece that would normally be chromed or painted.
fast4popper
I do like the paint idea for sure. one last question, with my wheels being chrome, will they have to be blasted in order to paint? the reason I ask is because some of the Chrome is already starting to corrode in the corners of the spokes and I would want that cleaned up before I spent money on this. thanks guys! Trade someone for painted OEM rims, I'm sure someone would still want chrome ones even if they are slightly less than perfect. Talk to Kyle, he's got painted ones if I remember right. Pay the tire shop to swap his tires over to your rims and pull yours off to take to the paint shop. It'll be cheaper and easier on you to start with painted ones. I was thinking about doing the same thing with a grill but figured that area would be prone to chipping and therefore a waste of money. it would definately look tight but after several years it would start chipping, which is only really a problem if your in it for the long haul.
