quetions about wheel weights and SOP gain/loss

Ok. After reading many many threads on the weight of the stock wheels(81-84 lbs rim&tire). I'm starting to not like the SOP losses I'm feeling with the new wheel(90 lbs). I find it really hard to believe that adding 24-36 lbs. would have that big of a difference. The SOP lose feels pretty bad to me. I guess I'll have to hit the track to be sure of how much time I'm adding to my 1/4 times. How much of a 1/4 time loss should one have by adding say 50 lbs. of wheel weight? I would think at most I would lose 0.1 but SOP it feel like more. I guess I'm having 2nd thought about my wheel purchase. :shakehead: Lots to consider. Anybody got any facts about wheel weight and 1/4 times?

I ran my stockers at the track and then my current heavier set-up. I was .2 off but this was done on different days so the weather could also be a factor.

Most recently I did this:

With my 16's (52lbs each) - 12.08

With my Konig's (~90lbs each) - 12.4(?) (also put my tailgate back on and had the floor jack in the bed though :ughdance: ). Hit the brakes at the end of the run and it sounded and felt like I got rear-ended by the other guy. Big dent in the front of the bed :shakehead:

Is your new set-up a taller overall diameter? That will hurt as well.

No. overall diameter is 1/4" shorter I believe. You lost a little over 0.3 with a big difference in weight. Maybe my SOP gain/loss meter is off lol  I'll have to give my nephew a call and get my stock wheels back for some testing at the track.

Keep in mind you are feeling this SOP loss in the middle of one of the hottest summers we have had and this is your first summer with forced induction on your truck right? Even my truck feels like a dog in this 90*+ heat...I think you are feeling more of that than the weight increase of the wheels...

I would guess losses to be roughly .1-.2 in a normal case of added rotating weight. Most guys that buy lightweight wheels though never buy the same tire so traction or height difference needs to be factored in also.

Well I'm heading to the track Friday for some testing. The traction plays a part in the SOP gain/loss. The stockers had 60K miles on them and I could turn all 4 over and that doesn't really happen with the new tires so it "feels" like it takes off slower. I'll try to make at least 4 runs Friday. 2 with new wheels and 2 with old wheels. I'll keep the time slips and report back Saturday. At least this gives me a reason to hit the track :driving: . I haven't been in a year and I didn't have the maggie then  I'm hoping I can break into the mid 13's with the stock pulley.
