brobradh77
I'm going to have a few bucks next month and am seriously thinking about a cam or some interior work. My mods: Volant CAI Zippy tune Zippy shiftlit/billet servos Yank 2600 stall dumped flows Goals are to "probably but maybe" add a s/c later on so want I am after in a cam is one that will work if i get a s/c but will also work great if I decide not to. I want to kill 2 birds with one stone if possible. I would think and please correct me if i'm wrong since this is a DD and i do take it to the track I want a cam with good low end to mid range power. Without hooking up my truck reaches 92+ mph in the 1/4 so I dont think i need high end power IMO. I also want one that people know with out a doubt I have a cam. I want to be able to hear the choppy idle but maintain everyday drivability. What all will I need besides a new tune? Springs, rods, etc.? Thanks in advance Edited July 23, 2007 by brobradh77 (see edit history)
zippy
I would guess based upon your given info that you'd be a good candidate for the XER273HR from Comp Cams. It will be very noticable that you have a bigger cam and yet will make decent torque all over.
brobradh77
would I need springs, push rods or anything? Thanks for the input. Is this it? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.a...mp;autoview=sku edit: that says its for a 5.7L any idea where I can find this or do you or Frank sell them? Yup that's the grind, and I agree that's a very good cam especially with your converter. Springs = Comp 26921-16, if you want to splurge and get titanium retainers they're Comp 772-16. Also get heavy-duty pushrods. Another very close cam to the XER273 is the TR blower cam: 224/227 562/567 114, I know that cam w/ P1SC + LT headers = 550 rwhp But you've got to have VERY good exhaust for the TR blower cam since the duration split is less, the pressure ratios through the engine would probably be "healthier" with the TR blower cam when running cutouts Either cam before you get FI will outrun the factory injectors; plan on an injector upgrade when doing the cam, plus a tune. And keep me in mind, I'd love to drive-up and help you wrench on that. Mr. P.
brobradh77
Thanks Steve thats some good input as always. have you done a cam install? My guy told me worste case $900 for a cam install and thats just labor. I was thinking cam or LT's and the cam would probably be a best HP gaines and unless I had to pay $900 it would be cheaper as well. By heavy duty push rods do you have any suggestions? By right grind do you mean application as well because when I read the application it was for a 5.7L V8. As for injectors wich ones are the ones that are a direct replacement? I am thinking the greentopped ones are the ones that dont require any mods.
rivierakid55
a cam will really benefit from lt's also. you want the 42lb marine injectors. they are plug and play.

As for my qualifications, at one point I was building 8 engines a year, yes I think we can handle a cam swap ;) I've also got a degree wheel & dial indicator etc, I don't do the "line up the dots" method, I get that bitch dead-nutz on its mark. I am a big believer in hardened pushrods, get 'em they're required because you're gonna be approaching the mid-6K-rpm range on the 1-2 shift; if you can swing the extra $$$ get the Ti retainers it's a big advantage in reducing/eliminating valve bounce/float. Don't worry about the "5.7L" tag in the Comp Cams catalog, all that means is that the cam was developed, tested, and dynoed on a 5.7L LS1 mule and the LQ9 is the exact same engine except a better breathing head and another 16 cubic inches. Injectors, I am honestly at a loss for a recommendation, I'm thinking the Delco marine 8.1L injectors? I am sure zippy would be happy to give you the right recommedation on that and I know he's posted here in the past what ones he's used with the XER273 cam. Then all you would have to worry about is getting your tune updated. Oh, and you better get a line on a pair of 28" slicks; if you want my old 16" spare tire rim you can have it too. Also give Thunder Racing a call because I bet they will already have a kit number with all this stuff in it at a discount and their cam is purpose-specific towards your end goals. Mr. P. brobradh77
cool as for the slicks Zippy recommended these http://www.mandhtires.com/store.php?crn=70...ion=show_detail They recomended me find a 17" x 10" set of rims for these. I will be doing this very soon as well. They come with high regard and the surfing I have done these really grab pavement and was told these will be all I need in the hooking dept. for now. o you really thin I need LT's before I do a cam? Holty
I suggest a LPE GT2-3 with 918 springs and comp push rods.
Krambo
I've also got a degree wheel & dial indicator etc, I don't do the "line up the dots" method, I get that bitch dead-nutz on its mark. That is what I did. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. if you can swing the extra $$$ get the Ti retainers it's a big advantage in reducing/eliminating valve bounce/float. cool as for the slicks Zippy recommended these http://www.mandhtires.com/store.php?crn=70...ion=show_detail They recomended me find a 17" x 10" set of rims for these. A wise choice. Get in contact with John from M&H and tell him Kevin (with the SS Silverado) sent ya (if you haven't already). He will hook ya up and give you alot of inside info on the exact tire you are looking at (I have 4 of the 275/55/16s Racemaster drag radials, same ones you ar looking at). Ask him about a discount code for on-line ordering to save some cabbage. I have his direct race tech phone # however he asked that I do not hand out that number nor the discount code so please shoot him an e-mail at ---> [email protected] I suggest jumping on the tires ASAP as they typically run low toward the end of the racing season and you may go on backorder I suggest a LPE GT2-3 with 918 springs and comp push rods. A proven performer with a great stock-like idle.
zippy
I suggest a LPE GT2-3 with 918 springs and comp push rods. That would cover everything he's looking for pretty much, but no noticable idle change, except maybe smoother.

05VHO
I have tsp 224/224 112lsa it sounds pretty good at idle, but when I went s/c I was bleeding off some boost. Not too bad though still had plenty of power.
detjoe
someone posted about a spring kit from GM, it had the zo6 yellow springs and some other stuff but it seemd real good. I have the 918's and they make alot of noise and I was told that the 918's can make false knock, I regret not using the yellow ones zippy told me to. For $900....do it your self! I guess I am in a similar situation, I would get FI if the deal is right...but I needed a cam for now! I have it and it runs good, but the times are still not nuts on. I wonder how much of my expected gain is lost by running the stock ehxaust manifolds/cats? I have a 112lsa and I can kind of tell it is narrow. I am not sure if it is the same cam the blowngibbs truck had at the event but he was running very good and sounded bad, and he is SC.
