Vortec MAX
I've read a bunch of posts where you guys say your AFR is spot on or you noticed KR during WOT etc. How are you guys logging this info? Mike

Mike You need HP Tuner, EFILive, or LS1edit. Or some type of data logging software. rivierakid55
or you can read the info with a wideband for afr and an aeroforce will read knock retard.
Vortec MAX
You need HP Tuner, EFILive, or LS1edit. Or some type of data logging software. If it is just software, how does it read data from the truck? Do you need a laptop with some kind of OBDII cable that hooks to the laptop? Sorry, I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff, but I want to learn. Mike
Vortec MAX
or you can read the info with a wideband for afr and an aeroforce will read knock retard. I googled the aeroforce scan gauge. Neat little unit. What does one of those cost. I wish it would read AFR as well. Is it possible to read AFR through the OBDII port, or do I need a standalone wideband AFR gauge of some sort? Do you have to disconnect one of the O2 sensors to hook the wideband too? misterp
Yes the truck's PCM can output real-time diagnosic data; there are over 300 variables in fact. You purchase a special cable that plugs into the OBD-II jack (next to the ebrake) and it in turn plugs into your computer and the data stream can be captured by specialized engine logging software. Also, some of the pricier software packages can do black-box recording so you don't have to have a laptop in the vehicle, you remove the logging instrument from the car and hook it into your computer to retrieve the log. AFR - the computer will tell you the AFR that it is commanding, that may or may not be what is actually produced in reality and the only way to know for sure is to verify it with a separate wideband air-fuel meter, and most tuning cables have a way to plug the external AFR guage in so that can be added (real-time) to the data capture. Mr. P. Hooking-up a wideband guage - yes you unscrew one of the front O2 sensors (I prefer the driver's side) and install the WB O2 sensor in it's place; there will be a hook-up somewhere in the new rigging where you can plug in the truck's original O2 sensor harness, that way the WB O2 sensor not only is reporting to the guage but simultaneously sending a signal to the PCM. Vortec MAX
Thanks for your replies. Now that I know about 1 percent of anything about this, what software, AFR interface, black box data recorders do you guys recommend? misterp
I purchased EFILive V2 and a PLX WB. HPTuners software is also very popular, and Innovative's WB products are pretty good quality too. The top 3 or 4 WB products are going to be similar because they all use the exact same Bosch sensor. Vortec MAX
Thanks Mr. P. When you say you bought EFILive V2, do you mean EFILive FlashScan V2? This device appears to be able to log data without using a laptop in the vehicle. Is this true? Is there a place to get this device cheaper than the 749 bucks listed? OUCH! So, when hooking up a WB, I have to thread a bunch of wires through the firewall into the cab? Do I have to find a power source as well, or are they self powered? Has anyone tried one of these? http://www.dashhawk.com/features.html Or heard any feedback from others? Vortec MAX
I drug this post out and dusted off the cobwebs because .justin. posted a link to a group buy on efi live v1. I think I would prefer v2, but I really don't know that much about it. I know a lot of you like HP Tuners as well. I have two questions that when answered, would help me decide between the two packages: 1. What does Zippy use? 2. Does anyone know what Allen Nelson of Nelson Performance uses? (since he is the current tuner of my truck) Thanks in advance. Mike Edited November 15, 2007 by Vortec MAX (see edit history)

If you're just looking to be able to log and not update your tune, the V1 scan tool might be all that you need. The software is free, so if you wanted to send your logs to zippy or nelson, they would be able to read them. The V1 scan retails for $249 and is also a part of the GP.
