Bought An Sts Need Some Help!

Recommended Posts

Bought a new STS Kit from Catfish on here < I got the GT67 upgrade , meth kit , EBC , and A nels9on tune , It was new and never installed.

My questions are I want to go with an intercooler and not the meth cause I have a 25ft boat I tow from time to time no more then 100 miles a time not more then 5 times a year either. So if anyone is interested in the meth kit let me know give me an offer and it is yours for the right price. It is the one directly from STS, With the tune will Nelson retune it for me with an intercooler ,Also this is going to be my DD and I need to know what else i need to get like a BOV,Injectors, FUel pump and what intercooler kit i should get , DO you have to remove the stock fan and go with the electric for all of them??

What should I get done to my tranny so that it is ok with this kit, It has the 5# spring and I will ever once in a while run more! ALso im a little dee dee dee when it comes to torque convertors how much is the factory stall and what would be ok for my truck, What is the difference with driving with say a 3000 over the stall what does it do??

Thanks Any help would be appreciated

you def. need to work on the tranny first! get a transgo HD2 shift kit with 2nd and 4th servos put in along with your converter, i would reccomend a yank 2800. you can get a intercooler that will fit your kit directly from sts and i've heard that nelson does retunes, but it may cost like 50 plus shipping or something. STS says that you don't need injectors or a new pump, but you probably want to do it with the GT67. hopefully this helps out some, Good luck with the process man you will enjoy the heck outta that truck after you prevent the tranny from goin out.

You don't need a BOV on an automatinc but its recomended so that when you let off the gas, yo wont get the turbo shutter sound. Plus its easier on the turbo. You will definatly need injectors and fuel pump, and as far as transmission goes. Get a bigger trans cooler, the transgo shift kit plus servos, that made my trans last 2.5 years and it has now reacently started to slip. so that should be the bare minimum. as far as intercoolers go, dont run the STS Front mount intercooler. That is a lot of additional piping and routing that will cause you to loose some boost. I went with a PWR performance Air to water barrel intercooler and it has worked great. this is their website here Link I installed right under the passanger door and had to do no mods to get it to work. I just had to run some 3/4" hose for the heat exchanger/intercooler hookups. And they are priced about the same as the STS kit. In addition PWR makes the cores for STS.

Lastly, I would ditch the nelson tune and get either EFIlive or HPtuners and do a custom tune. Mail order tunes are risky on a boosted application.

You don't need to run electric fans, and your stall speed on your TC should be around 3000, mine is 3200 and love it. with a higher stall you will definatly need a biger trans cooler and a good brand TC so that you can retain your towing.

What size injectors and fuel pump also , That intercooler you showed me with that how hard is it to hook up vs say the sts kit or the one from nelson performance... The reason I was asking about the electric fgans was that Melissa form Nelson told me with the intercooler I have to get rid of my clutch fan in my truck! If I send my ECU back to Nelson's and have the redo it will it last say 2 months before I can get another way of tunning my truck ?

With the higher stall wont the truck rev more before it moves ? Wont that be really hard on by trans with the boat ?What does a stall do anyway?

Is the transcooler from Tbyrne a good one to get?

I would guess the 42 truck ones would be ok for 5lbs, but if you got it running good the 60's might give you that extra amount of gas

IC install is similar to changing you air intake, clamps and pipe. There is a guy with a barrel W2A IC under the truck, with the heat exchanger up front. with A2A you wont need the fluid heat exchanger.

Efans would help pull more air thru once you have obstructed the radiator with a intercooler ans make space for cold air tubing.

Your best bet is to find someone in your area to tune it in person and have a wideband, with FI you can go lean and blow you motor easy...so find a good tuner, maybe thru STS???

you might want to ship the $$ for a top of the line converter if you are going to tow and have a turbo.

IMO trans coolers are in two types one that uses hard line and one that is for soft tubing. I used the supercooler in the stocklocation keeping my stock trans lines.

good luck.

That is me, I have the barrel intercooler under my passanger door. It is very simple to install, just remove the existing STS pipe that goes under the door and install the new barrel intercooler, run 3/4" hose to and from the heat exchanger, plumb the water pump and your done. it is much more easier that the STS/Nelson intercoolers... and remember, STS and Nelson get their stuff from PWR. As far as injectors go, the marine 42# are enough for up to 7-8# of boost if I remember correctly.

Yes, A higher stall will create more heat in the trans that is why a bigger trans cooler is a must. It will also allow your engine to rev higher before moving in order to help you move the heavy truck easier. It is harder on the trans only if you are always brake stalling it or flash stalling.

This is what I just ordered is this about right???

Intercooler Kit and piping

Efans and harness

injectors 44#

in tank fuel pump

transgo hd2 shift kit and servos

valve springs

a transcooler

boost gauge

fuel pressure gauge

wide band a/f gauge

triple pillar

bov

Worst part is I spent more money on my truck now then I put down when i bought it , with this and that STS kit I should be done for a bit except a converter i guess!!! But this seems about everything i need for this right , i figured do it all at once that way i will be done with it , thanks for your help

Thanks for your help chpspecial!!! What kind of quarter mile do you think it will run in low boost and high, I have the sts 0-5 psi electric boost controler?? stock spring is 5 psi what kind of hp do you think it will have ???

At 5# you should be running a low 14 high 13 in the quarter. Power wise, my truck made 370 lb.ft at 6# and 550 at 12# to the wheels on a syno dynamics dyno. At 12# my horsepower curve didn't climb to fast becaue my exhaust housing is to small for the high boost. This is all on a reletively stock motor. no intake or head work, just valve springs and a cam.

And I would get all of the bugs worked out at 5# first before you intall the electric boost controller and started to add boost. Once you have everything working properly, I say you shoot for 8-9#, you will be happy there and that will give you a low 13sec pass.

i really wanted to go with sts but after reading more and more i decided that if i get there package that started at $4000 and ended up installed around $9000 it was not worth it, especially since it only makes me run high or maybe mid 13s....ill just get a supercharger, and by the way sts told me to get all the stage two upgrades like the intercooler and injecters but stay with the smaller turbo because on a relative stock motor that is only gonna be setup at max 5-10psi it would show more performance because it kicks in sooner being that it is smaller and that it kicks in when my motor would need it most...but what ever you think, i guess it can be setup right but im afraid to drop $10000 and only run mid 13s!!!

If you drop 10k and still run 13's there is something wrong with your combo. however even with a supercharger, you are still going to have to do supporting mods, i.e. Trans, to get them to run 12 or faster. Ask chase and others.

yea i know, one of the reasons i aint done it yet is because i know it can be set up alot better than what they were wanting to do, you have a sweet truck by the way, is yours the one on streetfire.net that has an sts on it??? I need to talk to you about your setup to see if i can get some sweet setup for my truck!!!

If its the videos of me launching the truck yeah, thats mine. it has taken me a while to get it to this stage but It is great to drive how it is. On all those videos I launched at about 7# of boost and 3200-3400 RPMS
