96vteccd5 Posted December 24, 2008 Report Posted December 24, 2008 (edited) Good morning everyone and happy holidays. Well I drove up to NJ last night to visit my family and while I was at my mechanic shop I got stuck in a sheet of ice in on a mound. The truck is 2WD so I am had to try and rock it back and forth with breaking the tranny and the rear diff. A little different from my honda. Well, as I was doing this for some reason I felt the rear diff locking and unlocking pretty rough on the ice. I changed the rear diff fluid during turkey day and man was that old fluid dark and burnt. Do you guys think my rear diff is going out? I got the truck with 55k on it. Only has 63K on it now and I never break boost or tried to burn the tires. I got it from a family member that passed but I hope they didn't do burn outs all day I do see on sticker in the glove box it says G80 and read that is a locking diff just don't know if it should be a smooth engagement or should I hear/feel it. 96vteccd5 Posted December 24, 2008 Author Report Posted December 24, 2008 ok so after doing some searching it sounds like that is how the rear diff usually sounds when it is locking and unlocking. Just sounded a little funny that is all. A friend a mine has a cusco locking diff and I know his think locks even when he is turning so I just wanted to make sure. Looks like I will keep my eye out for an eaton lsd to be on the safe side. Quote

Fireman31 Posted December 24, 2008 Report Posted December 24, 2008 Keep your eye on it, the G80 is known for for its ability to self destruct. You may want to pull the cover off your diff to check the magnet and inspect the spider gear/clutches for damage. When I discovered that my G80 was hurt, I upgraded it to a Detroit TruTrac, no clutches to destroy. Here's the thread on my damaged G80..... http://www.silveradoss.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=47832 Quote
