03TNSSS
...ok I have a sorta dumb question. Why did you have to do a crank relearn after installing a custom tune?

Fireman31
In other words, the crankshaft position needs to be relearned occasionally when installing a new PCM, and the only way that can be done is with a GM Tech II, or Snap-on Modus or Solus...... Charlie Wheatley is the man!

Black2003SS
This has to be done anytime a different PCM with a new file not from the original vehicle is put in the vehicle. The pcm you have in the vehicle originally knows the crank position sensor as it was set at the factory. If you take that PCM out and put another one in, the new PCM does not know the crank position sensor in your truck, os it has to be "learned" or go through the process it uses to learn it. This is why I chose to get HPT and just overwrite the tune in the original PCM. By pulling the original tune and modifying that tune and then replacing it back to the pcm, you dont lose the crank sensor position settings. This is basically how zippy explained it to me. Thats also why if you send in your original pcm to get tuned, you most likely wont have to do a re-learn either.
Fireman31
A crank relearn is not always necessary with a mail order tune, I have never needed to one, and I know many here never have either. On a rare occasion somebody will need one, it is just the luck of the draw......
