Pontiac1 Posted March 28, 2010 Report Share Posted March 28, 2010 (edited) Whenever i start the truck my oil pressure gauge goes all the way up immediately. The gauge goes back to zero when i turn the truck off so its not the gauge. I'm guessing the sending unit is broken. Next question is where is it located on the block? Mostlikely you will need to remove the intake manifold. and it requires a special tool or a deep socket but can't remember the size ~7/8 TO O.P. Mine started dinging at me while driving down the road so I just unpluged it and the gauge went to 0. It is on the drivers side/middle in the back. xelom Posted April 7, 2010 Report Share Posted April 7, 2010 If its the oil sending unit/pressure switch you don't have to take the intake off. I replace mine a few months ago. When I turn the key it was going pass 80psi. Its located on the back of the block with a wire connection on the top. The easiest way to get to it is from the drivers side, take off the plastic cover(top and driverside) You will need a 1/16 or 17 deep socket. Parts stores sell them and have them label on the shelf as a oil pressure switch socket about $9, I bought a regular one(non inpack) it was a couple of dollar cheaper. You will also need two extentions, flex socket, ratchet, a small mirror(check the parts store counter) and a flash light to find it. It took me about five minutes to take off the old one and put the new one in, don't forget to use teflon tape on the threads. After the new one was in I turn the key and it back around 40psi at idle again. The only part I had to buy was the socket but for all the tools needed you will still come out cheaper than sending it to a dealer, and oh yea the part it self cost me $40 at the local parts store. Taped a small mirror to a piece of pipe i had layin around, figured out right where it was, pulled the plug, got the socket on there and it was off and replaced within 10 minutes.
