2011 Dodge Ram

Recommended Posts

Well today my parent's just bought a 2011 dodge ram. They've been shopping for about two weeks now, We looked at everything from the Chevy Avalanche/Silverado to the Nissan Titan. Didn't look at a Ford though, we would like our truck to not break down every 3 months :P

Anyways, the difference in quality and price between the Ram and Silverado just astonishes me. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Chevy but good god they really need to step up to the plate here. The Ram has a much nicer interior, The dash has the appearance of hand stitched leather, it doesn't feel like cheap plastic or anything. We managed to get a smoking deal on a 1500 Ram Sport for CAD $39,670. This truck is loaded to the max, it has the sport hood w/ 2 scoops, leather seats, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, multi media center (DVD touchscreen with 30GB HDD), Navigation, Backup camera, sunroof. We even got chrome step side rails thrown in for free. They have a 5 year (with extended warranty) 100,000 KM warranty, that is just amazing, free oil changes for 5 years, free car rentals if theres any service needed just an insane amount of things. If we're 150+ km's outside of town and suffer from a breakdown we get free hotel and meals. The truck has lots of balls too, and the exhaust system looks and sounds great from factory.

For 40 grand at Chevy, we could've got a Victory Red Silverado with cloth seats, sun roof and 4x4. No nav, no dvd, no backup camera... pretty much a base model truck. No extended warranty, or anything like that. The Chevy interior plastics just look much cheaper than the ram's too. I just couldn't believe the vast difference in quality vs. price. I hope Chevy takes notice of this and steps up their game for their next refresh, whenever that may be.

Thanks for reading

TLDR: Ram > Silverado for the moment :(

Just wait till that thing falls apart. Dodge/Chrysler is good about stuff breaking/going wrong. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee for about 5 month lol. Computer went bad after I got it haha. Piece of crap. It did have a nice interior and was very comfortable. :pepsicheer:

:withstupid: A guy i work with has had his dodge for 6 months and it has been to the dealership at least 5 times. He had his computer go bad, some wires were ripped off when he drove over soft snow (bad wire placement) and now he is having issues with his truck overheating just driving down the road and keeps taking it back and they have no idea whats wrong.

Yeah i know they have some cool gadgets on the them, but chevy is getting there they are starting to add cool new options and standards (blue tooth heated steering wheel etc..). I think chevy is waiting for the next body style next year to add a bunch of new gadgets to there trucks

Chrysler puts more into their interiors, I agree. But they also short-change other 'invisible' areas of the truck. I can assure you, they have people on staff whose jobs are to determine how to save 50-cents off the price of a floor mat. That said, I can promise you other areas of the truck will have shortcomings LIKE not as much nickle in the steel (rusts easily), poor alloy in aluminum components, increased use of resins/plastics (not automatically a bad thing), inferior micro-electronics, etc. There's lots of areas a car maker can skimp on the product and the general public will never know the difference. I'm probably the only person I know of that wonders what grade of alloys were used lol.

hmm, well the drive shafts did look oddly rusty when we picked it up.. Theres one tiny paint defect on the rear passenger door. We did buy a paint protection package so apparently if we ever get any rust problems they fix it for free, lifetime warranty. The SS feels faster stock for stock, but the ride is pretty comfortable.

Don't get me wrong, I am not faulting or praising anyone's choices! My comment comes from years of going through wrecking yards, that's where you really see quality IMO - you can look at a 1970 small block ford motor in the bonepile and it will be rusted to crap totally not rebuildable, really bad (expected after 30+ years in the weather!) - and next to it see a 1970 Cadillac 500 motor half-buried in the mud, and the caddy motor will not have any more than just a little surface scale on it, because the steel in those motors was made with more nickle. Same as the car bodies and frames, very very few people understand or research exactly how the rustproofing, metal prep, etc is done. The car company IMO that just shines in this regards is Rolls Royce, I don't care for the styling but wow the quality they put into those cars...

Anyways, my point is there are thousands of places in a vehicle that a car company can decide to be high or low quality, the interior and exterior surface are the only ones 99.999% of people consider. To pick on the Dodge Ram specifically, the SRT-10 was a $30K motor in a $3K truck IMO; same with the Dodge Diesels, the Cummins is a quality product but the truck itself quality-wise just doesn't hold-up like similar Ford & GMs. My opinion.

But I am in no way trying to dampen your folk's purchase - there's nothing more exciting than a new truck.
