Slight Vibration And Front Rotors.

I took my 03 SS to my truck guy to check on a vibration. At 60 MPH it just sounds like exhaust but at 80+ it turns into a growl and you can feel it in the floor. Not real bad.He went over the truck and said my front transfer case needs a bushing. It's a little loose but not real bad and no leaks. He wants $400-500 to replace it and install an update kit which is supposed to make it last longer.Has anyone heard of this kit and do you think this is a good deal.He also said if the vibration is not a big problem then to just drive it and leave it alone.

I told him I'll be doing brakes soon.He has owned a lot of GM trucks. He said if the last guy didn't use anti seize then the front rotors will be a bitch to remove.Does anyone have a special method here or do I just get out the sledge. He said he ruined a hub once trying to remove it with a sledge..

Thanks

???

These trucks don't have a "front transfer case" - did you mean to say front axle instead?

And I have never had trouble removing the front brake rotors. Then again, I don't live in as high a road-salt area as you northeast guys.

If there is 'wobble' in the transfer case shafts (bushings) you better get it rebuilt asap, because the case is made of magnesium (non-repairable) and is super expensive to replace. Get a second (and third?!) opinion from a shop that specializes in transfer cases.

Thanks Steve. It is the rear transfer case. This upgrade kit incudes a new clip and a stainless steel plate that protects the pump.He said it's not that bad yet but to fix it within a couple of months. As soon as the weather breaks I'm going to take a shot at it while I'm doing my brakes.I totally trust this guy as I have sent him over 30 trannys and rear ends.If there are any problems after he has done his work he pulls everything out and fixs it and won't even charge me for fluid. He has also owned a number of GM trucks that he has modded. He's one of the only guys I know that will get up at 3 in the morning to fix a snow plough truck that has broken down and needs to be fixed now.

I've done a few of these updates. The clip is for the pump, to hold it in place in the case. Without the clip the pump moves back and forth eating a hole in the case housing, causing a ll the fluid to leak out. If that happens you'll need a case half at minimum, if all the fluid leaks out the transfer case will run dry and be ruined. Then you will need a new transfer case.
