I bought an 03 SS this summer. Living in northern MN we have some less than good winter road conditions. After having driven this on some slippery roads as of late I have to characterize it as being "squirrely". I don't feel like there is much feedback from the road and when ever an slick spot is encountered I get the feeling that things are about out of control. Have never had this with any other vehicle. Do you think this is attributable to the posi, AWD or a tire issue (Goodyear something or others, 30% left.)?

My SS was "unstoppable", stable and controlled in snow. I had Yokohama Parada Spec-X tires that I used in winter. ANY truck or car will slide on ice, unless maybe you have studded tires.

Yeah I know all cars will slide on ice. But I've driven in this part of the country for 30 years and never experienced anything that inspired so little confidence on slippery roads.

You're welcome.

I think its the goodyears. I love my truck in the snow and Ice. The toyos I have now do ok, but they are 305s so they are kinda wide and dont grip the snow as well. I put studded narrow snow tires on 16s on my truck and my truck does amazing.

Yeah I would swap to some better tires, the factory goodyears LS2's are junk in my opinion. My truck had a worn set on it when I bought it and even driving on wet roads it felt slick. I run Hankook studded tires on 20"s during the winter and I get just of traction as any other chevy truck I've driven with studded tires.

when encountering the slippery conditions whats your initial reaction withe the SS? Ive raced in snow with awd for about 10 years and this truck is unstoppable imo. Just have to keep the pedal mashed if you get swurly. Look at Bridgestone Blizzaks, you shouldnt have these problems again. The stock goodyears are good to throw the truck in the snow for powersliding, donuts etc. I took my truck out a few times in 05 and 06 before they dropped sand and it was alot of fun but going upgrades you would have to have the right speed, grip and no tires spinnig. Since then my truck hasnt seen any elements. Granted where you live you get alot more snow. I highly suggest the Blizzaks. :chevrolet:

im running 275/55R20 yokohama geolander IT's and love em for being a non studded tire. i go places lots of guys cant even dream about with there 4wd trucks. when ya got all whel drive and lots of traction and a good set of "winter tires" not all seasons and such there isnt many places these trucks wont go in the snow

My truck came with brand new 285/55/20 Nitto grapplers All terrains on it, and i cant believe how well this truck does on the snow and Ice.... much better then my old 91 chevy 4v4 with Cooper AT's.

Highly recommend the Nitto grapplers.

Never felt in control of the SS on ice & snow with the stock goodyear tires. I put a set of Cooper Discoverer H/T plus tires on it and felt like I could drive through anything.

Get rid of the stock crap tires and you'll be fine.

The town I went to college in averaged 180 inches of snow per year and my truck was an absolute beast with Kuhmo Ecsta tires! Not to mention the amazing donuts the truck can do, you just have so much control!
