silverado777
BTW, did they put an HD sprag in during the build? Do you have a build sheet to what is involved with a "level 2"?? Thanks for the great info. This is everything they "supposedly" put in the level 2....http://performabuilt.com/level-2.html Still debating if I should just have them upgrade to a level 3....http://performabuilt.com/level-3.html Or just say screw it and go with an 80...http://performabuilt.com/4l80e.html
2bfast
Looks like the HD sprag had been installed. Like I said you never know......
T-Bag
Brian, so you mean it's best to always leave your trans in 3rd when launching or manually downshifting into 3rd at highway speeds if you planning on going WOT? And by doing this, that could prevent damaging the sprag? Please excuse my nieve questions but from what I read I'm interested to know. Although shifting from 4th to 2nd WOT is pretty tough on a trans. T-Bag
1 year on mines, 8 months of that N/A, 4 months blown. No issues, knock on wood. Like Brian said, it's luck of the draw I guess. Edited February 9, 2012 by Bad Ass Silvy (see edit history)
silverado777
I think I'm gonna see what it would take to get it upgraded to a level 3. The 80 swap just seems like such a PITA.
2bfast
I think I'm gonna see what it would take to get it upgraded to a level 3. The 80 swap just seems like such a PITA. To me the one time 80 swap is worth the hassle compared to the mulitple R&R of a 60. Although you are 2wd which makes it SO much nicer. You dont have to fumble around with a transfer case, front driveshaft, ect. I guess at the end of the day, if you have ever been in a transmission or somewhat understand how one works you will know there are a lot of parts, small passages, and just basically a lot going on inside with timing and the hydraulics. One small hiccup and everything goes nuts. Therefore an 80E can fail as well. But as heavy as these trucks are the 60E was never designed to handle the torque and power some of use make let alone the weight of the truck that adds to it. I learned the hard way along with many others. I should of swapped mine for an 80E from the git-go which is why I say go for it. PS : Iv had my 60E out a total of 7 times in four years. 3 of those were failures (2 sprags & an oil pump) Edited February 9, 2012 by 2BFAST (see edit history)

silverado777
So what all would I need to the swap? Is it just the trans, converter, drive line, modified crossmember and wire harness then obviously a retune? Is there anything that is plug-n-play for the wire harness? I found this site... looks like they have some nifty stuff... http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4L60E_to_4L80E_Swap.htm
Fireman31
Level 3 here, been going strong for roughly 3-1/2 years now, and i've been pretty hard on it.

Are you just swapping to an 80 just to do it or are you planning on a power adder? If you plan on staying factory converting to an 80 will just slow you down due to parasitic loss, weight, and taller 1st gear ratio. If you are running some sort of power adder (procharger, magnacharger, turbo) generally those factors dont come into effect as the added power overcomes. You can re-gear 1st gear to a lower gear (dont have the ratio specs off the top of my head) but its really expensive and generally guys with all out race cars only do this. I have heard many guys b*tch about this cause they want the strength of an 80 but still want the lower 1st gear the 60 has. If you plan to stay just bolt ons, keep ur shift kit and servos and run it till something goes. SEARCH BUTTON!! lmao Anyway, here are a couple threads I found on pt.net about an 80 swap. I think there might be a couple on here too but I didnt look. http://www.performan...-advice-490807/ http://www.performan...-o-pics-448431/ PS: I texted Jon (idahoblkss) to chime in as he has done an 80 swap on his pile even though his is AWD. Therefore you being 2WD you will need less parts. Edited February 9, 2012 by 2BFAST (see edit history)
