The engine actually doesn't even power the wheels, when you're running low on charge, you pull a paddle and it fires up the engine, which in turn produces more electricity to run the car. The car is called the Fisker Karma, and the solar panel on the roof is there to power all the interior stuff, radio, ac/heat, as Top Gear put it, all the gadgetry!
