porksoda
So I plan on changing the stepper motors on my gauge cluster because it is tons cheaper than sending it off. Anyway all the write ups I see show the needles already zeroed out so they can put tape down and mark where the needle was at. On mine the needles have been long dead and never zero out. Tranny temp gauge stays pegged and tach will be real jumpy but never goes below 2k. How would I go about knowing where to put them back to where they are supposed to start? 2001silverado364
Turn them all the way to the left, they have a stop you'll feel it. Then mark the area after laying tape under the needle.
porksoda
So they actually will have a stop or they will just have a rough spot there at the beginning signifying the beginning?
2001silverado364
It's pretty much a stop, you won't miss it, trust me, the stepper motor gets to a point where it won't turn any more to the left.
porksoda
So before I pull it apart should I try to find the spot with the dead stepper motors and mark it for the new?
2001silverado364
Yes, mark where the steppers motors stop when you turn them by hand on the gauge face.
porksoda
Thanks! Everyone that does writeups already had them zeored out and just mark them.
porksoda
Does the gas gauge zero out all the way to the left too?
2001silverado364
Pretty sure they all do. Here's a vid to further explain it.

silverado777
Well the right way is to do it electronically since the new motors will zero out differently than your old ones.. But you'd have to sent it to me for that.
