Piston slap?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I bought a new truck to rip around the winter and such. And I noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine. I you tubed piston slap and it sounds the same, but I read that after the engine warms the piston slap should quiet down. That was the case for the iron block 5.3, but mine is the aluminum block 5.3 HO. Any input here guys? Could it be lifters. Oh ya the truck is a 2005 silverado 4x4 ext cab l33 5.3

This is piston slap (a very severe case). Low quality vid, but you can definitely hear it. Sounds like a diesel. Haha. If i were you, id take off your serpentine belt and run it for a few seconds to eliminate the accessory drive (as ive heard water pumps make this noise as well). Then put the belt back on, start the truck and probe around with the stethoscope. Hope you find the problem and hope its an easy fix! But on the bright side, if it needs a rebuild, you can slap in a 370, 408, or a 427!

Normally piston slap will quite down once the engine is warm. Yu can also hear valve train noise and or the injector pulse which is also normal. A lot of people mistake piston slap for those other noises. A video of the noise would help pin point it if possible.

There is nothing you can do with the injector pulse. How loud is it while your driving? Valve train noise is normal depending on how loud it actually is. The rocker arms on these engines are self adjusting, so trying to remove slop in them wont happen. If I remember right the rockers should be tightened to 22 Ft LBS and thats it. You can loosen them up and re torque them and see if that helps, but I doubt it. If they were lose the noise would sound like a ticking time bomb and you probably would have lost a rocker or bent a push rod and got a mis fire type symptom.

Some vehicles have the noise louder than others. My camaro has a decent amount of valve train noise, my buddy has the same year camaro and his isnt as loud.

Are you using a factory weight oil? Basically as long as you have good oil pressure, and the motor doesnt sound like you have someone hitting it with a hammer, or hear a squealing or screeching (or bearing noise) you dont have to worry.
