Replacing head unit soon, whole system later

Recommended Posts

When I bought my SSS I was quite satisfied with the sound and head unit, but did intend to upgrade the system down the road... like after I was done with making the truck faster and look nicer. Alas, shortly after buying it the cd player stopped working and I HATE the radio. Can't stand it. So, I'm going to be replacing the head unit soon so I can gain back control over what I'm listening to and I'm looking for any advice on what I should do/keep in mind while I'm replacing the head unit to make life easier down the road when I upgrade the rest of the system.

I'm looking at a Pioneer AVH-8400BH. Seems like a good time to buy these as Pioneer rolls out their 2013 line up.

This unit does have pre-outs, but I've never done a whole car audio system before so I want to make sure I'm not overlooking something that I'll need that this head unit doesn't provide. It may be years before the rest of this happens, but I'd prefer not to drop another $500 on a new head unit in a couple years because I failed to plan ahead.

Thanks for any input.

Yeah, the head unit I'm looking at has the app radio functionality, but it also has two usb ports, an sdhc slot, and it plays mp3s from a CD/DVD and has a 7" motorized removable touch screen with the highest resolution I've been able to find.

It does have 3 sets of 4V pre-outs.

8400bh is a great head unit and will support anything you want except for a full active system. That can be supported through amp crossovers though.

The 2013 units supposedly have android support now. If you own an iPhone the 8400 will be a great buy still.
