jwest1975
Call it bad luck... This happened to me on Sunday night 4/6 while turning into a parking lot from a major road : Luckily, I did not unknowingly drive on the rim with a flat. I pulled in and it was still hissing loudy when I got out of the truck. This is what happened: I ended up sporting a new and unwanted look for a few days. This was the temporary result: Just for the record, this was what was in the road that shouldn't have been: So, it cost me $155+ for the new tire. One good thing....there is only 1400 miles or so on the other 3 tires. That means that they are still pretty well matched as far as tread wear goes. Umm, what else is good. Onstar does know exactly where you are when you call in. They were able to use all my information on file to do a 3-way call to Chevrolet Roadside Assistance and get them to me so I didn't have to get cold and dirty. That was kinda cool. Ahh...ok, so the whole situation really sucked! As I said before, call it bad luck. Justin PS- Don't bother switching out 1 rim for the spare.....IT DOES NOT LOOK THAT COOL! Man, could have been a lot worse, $480.00 worse if the tread didn't match up very well. How long did it take to change the tire, and did you have any problems locating the new tire? Pics are excellent and looks like this happened at night. Lets hope this is the end of a little, yet painful, bad luck

dcairns
Too bad Justin. Like you say, at least the other tires are still new too, so you won't have a mismatch. That always bugs me too. ChevyZr2001
I have heard that putting a a smaller wheel on one side and stock 20" is not good to drive on. I read somewhere that some guy had an f-150 that came with 17"s but his spare was a 16 and he blew out his rear-end after a few miles. Cause one 1 rim was smaller than the other. jwest1975
Cause one 1 rim was smaller than the other. The overall diameter of the spare vs. the stock are almost exactly the same. Because of this, I don't think that there would be any problems as long as you remember that you are using a spare. You have no idea how tough it is/was to stay off the gas pedal with a spare tire on there! It really sucked! Justin
cdn111
the rim diameter would have nothing to do with it. I don't know if this is the case here but like on avalanche's when they have 17's the spare is a sixteen with a larger tire so the overall circumference is the same. Whether or not this is how it is on the SS I don't know but I would think it would be. -Corey

It only makes sense that they would try and do that in order to prevent any problems. How long did it take to change the tire, and did you have any problems locating the new tire? I didn't do it myself, I had someone from Chevrolet Roadside Assistance do it for me. He couldn't figure out how the spare tire was lowered at first, but once he did...it took only a couple minutes to switch it. As far as the new tire goes, I went back to my dealer so he could make a little bit of money on me. I could have saved about $20.00 by getting it on the internet myself. That would have taken longer to get it though. The dealer ordered the tire for me and had it the next morning. So getting the new tire was not a probelm. whmayhew
Justin, Last year when I bought my Avalanche it had Goodyear tires on it. When I had 1000 miles on it I picked up a piece of steel going down the road. I put the spare on and went to Haley Tire in Bangor. They charged me about $160. for a new tire. They said that Chevy specs car tires on these vehicles to make them ride better. I have had 2 vehicles with Goodyear tires and had trouble with both of them. The Firestone tires do not seem to have this problem. Haley's talked me into the road hazard last year for $40.00. The week after I got my SS I went back to Haley's and paid $60.00 for the road hazard for this vehicle. They told me the replacement cost was close to $300.00 each. You got a good deal at the dealer. Haley's is an authorized Goodyear dealer. Wes

Be weary of your local authorized dealer as he may be trying to take you for a proverbial ride!!!!!! In Justins case, seems like he did get a fair deal
