Almost made it to the 1/8 mile marker...

I almost had some times for you crazy folks, but...

Right before the 1/8 mile mark, I heard a big bang. I got out of it and checked the gauges and scanner, and everything was cool, but wanted to check it out and coasted through the end of the run (and still beat a mustang in both time and to the finish).

Then, when I was pulled over in the pits trying to see what broke (forgot the damn flashlight too) it started to drizzle. I couldn't see anything wrong, and saw the mustang I raced leaving, so I thought maybe he broke. The truck was running fine at idle so I got back in the staging lanes and sat through the drying delay, and couldn't get the truck over 56 mph. :puke: It just ran out of go...

Obviously something was screwed and it was raining again so I came home.

Here's the good news: Just got out from under the truck. Nothing's broken. I just blew an intake coupler off the line (right off the turbo).

So here's what I (re)learned:

1) always take a flash light and tools to the track :)

2) tighten the damn hose clamps on the intake line

3) NA with a 15 foot intake pipe and no air cleaner = 56 mph top speed

what time did you end up running? even though you only made it through the 1/8th mile...

I didn't even get the slip. There was no point -- I didn't make the 1/8 -- almost but no cigar.

The Lightning guy at the track said I crossed the line at 76 mph (and thats after coasting more than 1/2 way). I think the mustang ran a 15.1 at 93 mph, and I got the win light. (all of that was according to the Lightning driver).

The second run I was going slow enough to see... But I won't post it :)

LMAO!!!

What did I tell you about those intake pipes! You think my videos of me running 12.9@92mph were with all my tubing connected??? Hahahaah

Make sure you have the turbo clocked right also. I know when we put my smaller exhaust housing on we didn't line it up perfectly and under load the piping would pop off in 3rd gear. Did it like 8-9 times before we re aligned the turbo and it has only happened once since and that was up front by my MAF...

Also when you decide to get nutty with boost, replace all those hose clamps with T-Clamps. They are sooo much stronger. :)

Sorry to hear about your wasted trip bro. But you tell it in such an amusing way I can't help buy laugh.

That's got to be scary as hell.

I always wonder what you high HP guys do if you break.

Do any of you have AAA or anything?  The track is like, 1:40 from me.  That'd be a HUGE tow-bill.

I live about 30-20 minutes from my track but its way the hell out in the middle of no where. It would suck to wait on the tow truck...

  • 3 weeks later...

I may be new to the SS scene, but I am not new to turbos. When I first got my 87 GN I was thinkering(the process of thinking and tinkering) with it, and I took it around the block and over to "Test and Tune Road" (I live out in the country) and I let her rip. All stock motor... 15 pounds of boost. Well as soon as the turbo hit 5 PSI, I heard a loud POP....and the car stumbled and fluttered... I flipped out. I got out looked for oil, looked for anything, popped the hood, couldn't find anything wrong! I limped her home and it sat for two days... I went through the service manuals, called buddies up. Well, come to find out, the up pipe from the intercooler to the intake slipped off at the intercooler neck, just enough so it made a massive vaccum leak. I felt sooo much better.

It is VERY important to have a well clamped and sealed system. Vaccum leaks can cause majpr tuning problems with GNs, they will make your O2s freak out, the MAF freaks out, the fuel pressure freaks out. Moral of the story... Super Glue, zip tie, clamp, turnicate, do what you have to do!!!

One thing that helps, they make a thinner, soft material for the joints that seals up nice. It's a synthetic jibblet, I will try and find the distributer if you want. I run 26 pounds of boost now with a larger turbo and alcohol injection...I had to get them.

LMAO! He said Turnicate!

I hear ya though. I hate when tubing pops off. The first time scared the crap out of me too. I limped back home but on the way realized it didn't want to idle right but didn't stubmle when giving it more pedal so I went checking for tubes and sure enough. Now I just carry the tools needed to fix a loose pipe just in case. :)

going back again sometime thinking of this post?

As soon as everything is seated and burned in on the FLP :)

Hey Erik, let me know next time you're going, I'd love to watch! I'm still sitting on the Radix/STS fence... but these days leaning way more towards the STS side... I'd like to learn more about your setup and run a few questions by you if that's cool?

I seem to end up on STS' website every day, watching that awesome "tunnel video" over and over again. By the way, saw your truck on there... lookin' good!
