I hope this isn't a repost...

My OnStar subscription is expiring on the truck, so I've been getting all kinds of letters in the mail. They've basically just reminded me that I have it in the truck. I've had OnStar in my trucks since 2002, and haven't use it ONCE.

What do you guys think of it? If you use it, what for?

I can't think of any reason to use it. I have a automotive GPS system that works great, and I hate talking on the phone.

I know it's good for medical emergencies and all.. but what else?

Your thoughts?

I guess I only want it because I don't have it. But the whole purpose of it is pretty useless. I can use my cell phone pretty much where ever I am at all times. If I need to get a hold of anyone I can.

The only uses I think OnStar serves a purpose for are engine diagnostics (pretty sweet IMO) and GPS. On my last trip back from Chicago the GPS would have come in handy. 94W went down to 1 lane just outside of Eau Claire, Traffic was backed up for miles. I pulled off at the next exit took HWY 12 the rest of the through Eau Claire. OnStar may have been able to give me some better directions.

Other than that I think it is a cool technology but not something I couldn't live without.

I don't have it and really don't want/need it.

I guess I could see the appeal for some people, but I have a GPS navigation system in my truck, I have GPS navigation on my NEXTEL phone, and I can access the internet w/ my Blackberry from anywhere in the US... so I'm wired enough as it is.... don't really need anymore 'electronic leashes' to tie me to the world. :uhoh:

The only really great part about it (and it should be free of charge on all GM vehicles IMO) is the emergency system. If I were ever involved in a car accident and knocked out it would be nice to know that help would be on the way.... other than that its just not worth the $$$ IMO

The emergency feature is a nice plus, but the phone minutes are too expensive compared to regular cell phone plans. The phone is a nice "show off" feature if you insist on wasting money that could be used on more useful gadgets.

I probably won't renew my service when the free subscription ends.

I have used it for the door unlock a few times and it has been really nice. Of course I could just be more careful. All of the times it has been at the boat launch , you know no wallet left key in truck after pulling the boat out and crap doors locked.. I think it would pay for itself in one accedent though. I had a good friend die in a crash and it was because he went in a field on a dark night and they did not find him till morning..

I only have mine because if your truck is stolen, they can track it.  I don't use it for anything else.

I haven't verified it, but I've heard that all the thieves have to do is break the antenna off and it disables it. :smash:

I really hope thats not the case

I'm not going to pay $200 for the year and then extra for minutes. But when it was free, it was fun to call them up and BS. They :D could tell you what street you are on and stuff like that. The things I do for a laugh.
