Engine Oil

I was curious what all you guys are running for oil and filters in your SS.

I changed out the factory oil at about 500 miles. My understanding is that even if you only use synthetics, you really do need regular oil during break-in specifically BECAUSE it is not as "slippery" and you want to let the engine seat all the parts when new. That made sense so once break-in was over I put in synthetic Mobile 1 with a K&N filter. I have also heard that Amsoil (and their filters) are great but not API certified. Many, including myself, also don't like their marketing schemes. They seem to push distributorship's more than their oil. Royal Purple and Mobile 1 are supposed to be two top synthetic oils.

Here's what I have read: Top filters are Mobile 1 (good filtration but somewhat restrictive)

Amsoil filter (high volume flow but not quite as good filtration)

K&N filter (also high volume but not as good in filtration)

The article said that if you race and/or drive a vehicle hard then the high volume filters are best. Conversely, if you don't push your vehicle as hard then the more restrictive filter with better filtration is what you should use.

What are your feelings on this for our SS's.

I changed my oil at 31xx and put Mobil1 in, my oil still looked very fresh so there isnt much wear going on in there. As far as filters, i was just going to use a delco, but none of the stores around here have the filter, the only one i found was a K&N, so i put that in there, it was a little on the expensive side, but we'll see how clean it keeps the oil

I have used Mobil 1 and GM filters in my GM vehicles for years and see no reason to change now. My SS hit 1000 miles today and will get Mobil 1 this week. I am a BIG believer in Mobil 1!

Why Mobil 1? I believe you, but just curious what has brought you guys to be fans of Mobil 1.

well all i can tell you is, a long time ago i was reading a magazine, can't remember which one, and they were doing tests on differnt synthetic oils. mobil one one out-performed everyone it was up against, including red-line. it made me a believer i guess, although i've heard that royal-purple is good stuff.:chevy:

johnsen,

I'm surprised, too. I knew M1 would be high but I've heard so many good things about Royal Purple and Red Line that I thought they might have a better showing. I guess that's why we need to keep asking questions, huh?

Thanks all for the replies.

Well, I suppose I'll take a beating for this, but in the real world of day-to-day driving, I'm not convinced it makes any significant difference. Just the same, it felt kind of good to fill it with Royal Purple at 1000 mi. Looks cool going in, anyhow.

Havent made it to the first oil change yet (My truck and I are seperated), but Mobil 1 is what she'll drink. I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade and have been in the business for 22 years. All of the turbine engines installed on helos and airplanes run synthetic and if works for them, it is bound to work for me. :chevy::flag:
