  1. So the damn thing still makes alot of noise, slightly less since i changed to oil but still alot more than it should. I will be pulling the diff and splitting it to change bearings and seals hopefully the gears are ok...... $500+ for the gears... so its not to bad to do? what about setting "backlash"? i heard that not setting that properly could toast the diff. What about manuals? is there any decent service manual for an SS. I guess this is a lesson i put 10,000 miles on the truck since original owner only changed tranny oil and engine oil, never assume that the person that owned it before changed transfer case or diff oil...... judging by the condition of the drain and fill plugs it has never been done in 84,000 miles........ (still paint on the bolts!)
  2. ok i drained the front diff oil, it was jet black with a metallic sheen to it and right full of metal shavings....... so what would the next step be? Has anyone pulled the diff and split it? If so where do i find literature on it, torque specs, directions etc. ? I am pretty good with mechanical stuff have alot of tools pullers oxyacetylene torch etc, (not a whole lot of truck experience) but i think i could get it done with a little guidance. The gears seals and bearings will all probably need to be replaced... Thanks
  3. i have a 2003 Silverado SS AWD it has 84,000 miles on it and it has recently started making a growl or dull grinding noise from what sounds like the front of the truck. It only makes noise when driving down the road, with power on, as soon as you let off the gas it goes away. It does not do it coasting or when revving the motor when not in gear. It is not worsened by turning. You can feel a slight vibration from the floor of the truck. Replaced the brake discs, had a mechanic go through the U-joints and check the front wheel bearings for play.... nothing. If anyone has had a similar issue please let me know.
