  1. 1. About 85% of my business is domestics, the other 10% are foreign, honda, mitsu, jag, bmw etc. The remaining 5% are HD trucks 2. You were partially right here, the fuse whas not blown, but it was loose. Like the one blade wasnt made right, so it would just flop around causing intermittent power to the dlc 3. After i was able to scan it, i didnt get any codes. No current, no history. So im leaning towards your number 4. that there is an intermittent short in the cluster causing the light to come on and off at times.
  2. Got a really weird CEL issue and before i go digging in and ohm's wires and test modules i want to see if someone has heard of this before and knows a solution. Im an ase certified mechanic, with about everything i need at my disposal, including a brand new 13k snap-on modis scanner. Like i said, i just was hoping someone may have heard of this before and can save me hours of diagnosis time... Yesterday: the wife is in the silverado and calls me and tells me the check engine light just came on, i asked if it was flashing and she says no. ( That let me know that there was no catalyst damaging missfire and that she should be fine driving it.) I figured it was another evap leak, as we just put gas in it and maybe the cap wasnt tight. I told her go ahead and finish doing what your doing and ill take it to work in the am. This morning: I get in the truck and notice, yes the CEL is on, fire it up and all sounds great. The 20 min drive to work the light stays on, but i dont notice any sort of drivability issues. This afternoon: On my lunch break i grab my little quick scanner figure ill see what code is in it, and if its another evap leak ill just clear it as ive already passed e check. This is where the fun happens. I open the door and out of habit plug my scan tool in and turn the key to the ON position. I glance down at my scanner and it wont turn on. (this tells me no power at the data link connector) So i turn the key off and back on and watch for the CEL to light up for self test. (this will tell me that the pcm is turning on as it should) The cel DOES NOT light up for self test. (this tells me the pcm isnt turning on.) With the pcm not turning on you would think the truck will not run, but i turn the key to start and it fires up without a problem. I do this 3 more times, no cel with key on, no cel during crank, no cel while running. At this time i know i got some sort of issue and decide to drive the truck to go and get my lunch and see if the light will come on so i can grab the code real quick. I drove the truck about 6 miles without any sort of problem. After i eat, i get in, and turn the key to start. Truck fires up as always and i notice the CEL is on and staying on.(this tells me its not a blown fuse) Immediately i grab my quick scanner from the passenger seat and go to plug it in. In that 15 seconds the light shuts off and will not come back on. Not with key on engine off, or with key on engine running, not even self test. But the truck does run perfectly. Thoughts.....?
  3. As long as i can get off work ill head down.
  4. if i can get that sat off, im down!
  5. thanks you. yes the truck means the world to me, not just because what it is but more because who's it was. Sometimes its hard to drive it just because i know it was his, but i aways just figure hes riding shotgun even though i cant see him.
  6. thanks for the welcome everyone, a meet sounds good to me. Just let me know when and where
  7. yep sandusky isnt very far at all, i used to live in vermillion.
  8. im in olmsted falls, and thank you.
  9. Just wanted to say hello, new guy TJ here. Ive got an 03 Silverado SS, basically stock except for a different grill, and a flowmaster muffler. Im a jeep guy (well im a anything cool with a motor guy) so i figured if there is a forum for jeeps there has to be one for Silverado SS's and sure enough a google search led me here. The truck belonged to my best friend, and brother in law Jerry. Me and him were closer than i am with 98% of my own blood family. Jerry Lee originally bought the truck used from a local dealer, it was his dream truck he told me. He showed up at my work an hour after he bought it and told me to take my lunch break cause we were going cruisin. Me and him had alot of good and even shared some bad times in this truck together. I ended up going to an automotive college in PA, and while i was gone Jerry told me he was going to join the Marine Core, he made me promise to write him ever week and i agreed as any friend would. I wrote hime every week he was in boot camp, and he wrote me right back. I think the letters actually made our friendship harder, as me and him went through hard times together through those letters and helped eachother through. It was great news when he shared with me that he was having a baby girl, and that he would be naming me the god father of her. I think now you all get the picture of our friendship, Heck im even engaged to his sister and we have a beautiful baby girl together. So now onto the sad part. One sunday morning i get the call that there has been an accident, Jerry wrecked his motorcycle and was in critical condition. I immediately emptied my savings bought a gps, and hit the highway to NC where Jerry was stationed at. Once i was there i got to see my best friend, banged and bruised, just laying in the hospital bed in the icu. No matter how much i wanted him to, my best friend didnt make it through. Now i get to visit him at the rittman national cemetary where he is burried. His father was kind enough to sell me and Jerrys Sister (my wife) this truck, instead of it sitting in the barn as it has been the past few years. This truck will be a rolling tribute to him and his life. The truck will remain as he left it only undergoing subtle mods, to enhance performance, looks, and handeling, as i think he would have done himself. Thanks for looking, and talking the time to read my intro.
