  1. I did admire the sexy beast today! A car cover is in the immediate future. It gets dusty in my shop (since grass cutting season has begun).

It got washed this weekend! I have a few items to tackle in the coming months...

Going to put some less aggressive tires on it in the near future. The ones on it are almost new, but make a little noise. I want it smooth and quite. If I wanted noise, I would have kept my diesel! Looking at General HTS60s. They are very smooth and quite on my son's Suburban, and have a great wear index. They're also 117 load index, so I can air them up to 51 PSI when I hook-up the trailer.

Speaking of trailer towing, I'm having problems with the factory trailer wiring. I'm sure I'll be asking for expert's seasoned advice when I get into it!

A custom tune is going to be scheduled, along with some trans parts to firm up the shifts a little. Going to add a case saver, pump cover and a new transfer case chain while I have it on the lift. Trans and transfer case refill with Allison Transynd fluid for good measure.

I try to drive it every Sunday to church (weather permitting, only on dry days!). It gets lots of comments. I've only seen one other, in person, since I got it three months ago (a ISSS, no less).

  2. Any stage one or stage two cam will give you some extra horses, but if you're looking for power way down low, there's not much gain. I have to hunt to see any dyno numbers below 3,000 RPM, and when I do happen to find a graph that goes that low, there not much to be gained. Almost all of my driving is below 2,300 RPM (3 grand towing). I guess it would be nice during the occasional romp through the gears, but if I want to go fast, I'll flog on one of my race cars!

  3. Trailer brakes/controller MANDATORY! Would be advisable to beef-up the rear suspension (bags?) for tongue weight (weight distributing hitch highly recommended). Air tires rear tires up to max PSI (I have load Range 117, 51 PSI tires). Mine tows GREAT pulling my '65 Malibu SS/scooter/junk at about 6,000# total trailer weight, it just bottoms out the factory G60 (dropped) suspension on bumps.

I haven't hooked it up to my 28" enclosed yet, but it's gonna happen! About 8,500#..... She's a "pretty" WORK TRUCK!

  4. I'd want to know what's in the "built" trans (receipts/parts list). Look for obvious issues with the engine, check for stored codes, take oil fill cap off when running and look for excessive crankcase pressure. And.....drive the heck out of it while it's still not yours! If it flies apart, it wasn't a good deal!

  5. What did your diff sound like? I have a noise in the front end under a load, almost like a wheel bearing, but when you take your foot off the pedal it quiets down. I have a feeling the front diff is tired in mine.

Exact symptoms mine had. When off the throttle the whine/low roar/growl would go away. On the throttle, the noise was present.

When I got the truck home, I went over all the fluid levels/condition. I noticed the front diff had a right side axle seal leaking (not enough to drip, but fluid had slung around the flange). Couldn't touch the fluid through the fill hole, drained (lots of magnetic fluff on the drain plug), only about 1 qt. came out (about 1/2 of the recommended fill). Apparently, the leak had gone unnoticed and the oil level had been dropping for some time. I refilled with Mobil 1 75w90, the noise was a little quieter, but I knew the diff was injured.

I'll order parts (bearings and seals) and rebuild the original for a spare. This is a common problem.

  6. Finally found a front differential to put in the SSS. I didn't want to tear it apart, and have it incapacitated. Got a donor from a 2006 Sierra Denali w/ 126K miles. Put it in and it's whisper quiet. Now I can take my time repairing the original.

Wasn't too big of a job. About 2 hours, working off the floor, truck on ramps. Tip: have a strong "bench presser" to stab the differential, while you start a bolt. I did it, but it was a strain!

Thanks for all the "how-to's, and previous advice on what the problem was.
