  1. I had a bunch of parts and a Blazer sitting at my shop. There is a pretty good Mud park about 15mins from me so I decided to put something together. It is an 87s-10 Blazer w/a 5.3l eng and converted to carburator. I'm waiting for a set of F-body LS shorty headers, I have a couple of 1 chamber Flowmaster mufflers I'm going put on it. The tranny is a 700R4 and the rest of the running gear is stock. The engine fits pretty good. I had to notch the oil pan to clear the front diff. I used the stock 5.3 truck mounts and welded a block to the frame. the drivers side coils just clear the brake booster thanks to a 3in body lift. Should be ready for the Superbowl weekend event.

  2. Wow looks like detonation more than going lean. What do the spark plugs look like? Where did you have the timing set at ? Also what jets were you useing?

The marks are from the broken peice bouncing around in there. It did run lean and detonte though. As fow the timing I'm not sure what is was set at, the PCM was tuned by PCMfor less with a nitrous tune a few years ago. As for the jets the fuel was a .036 and the Nitrous was a .075 and I must have F-ed up it was suppose to be a .071 :banghead: Oh well good excuse to build an engine

  3. so is that a broken ring land or a broken ring?? kinda hard to see. once i had a bad back fire and lost #7 cylinder. drover it for like 50 miles with no problem it just would smoke under a load. it ended up cracking from one side of the piston to the other. piston still came out in one piece. just lost like 60Psi in that cylinder.

That sucks, is that part of the piston that's broke off in the pic or is that part of the ring?

That is a broken ring land. surpisingly it did not damage anything even the head. I could just replace the piston and put it back together but were's the fun in that :jester:

  4. Here is a picture of my knocking noise from my weekend at NHRA Unleashed.

    Interlachen-Florahome-20101113-00030.jpg

It didn't do any damage to the cylinder at all. At the very least I am going to put in a set of GM Performance LSX forged pistons, they are the flat-top 4.065 pistons. If the budget permits with the tax return I my go with a full rotating assy. Not sure what C.I.D. I do have a set of LS6 heads and cam too. We'll see what happens :fingersx:

  5. Honestly, you should be running at least 2 steps colder on the plugs and a non projected plug at that. NGK TR55s will become little blow torches at N2O levels you are spraying. You need to run BR7EF plugs or even B8EFS plugs gapped at 030-.035 (I prefer a tighter gap). As for timing, I would run 16*, do a run and pull the plugs to see where timing mark is at. Increase as needed. There is no "correct" timing value, plugs will tell the story.

I hope you are up and running soon!

I will do some checking on the plugs. When I researched for plugs these are what were recommended, as for projected :dunno: I do know not to run platinum or iridium. I'm always up for suggestions. I have been an auto tech for close to 20yrs, I'm not one to say I "know " everything. You can't know everything in this field. I learn something new everyday. Thanks for they advice  I do check the plugs.

  6. Well Checking the truck out today, it appears to be cam related. Wont know for a sure untill I tear into it. At the very least it will get the LS6 heads (ported & polished) Cam and valve train upgrade before going back in. I will probably swap to the LS1 this weekend. I won't be loosing much. Just going from a 364ci to a 346ci (4.00" bore down to a 3.90") both engine stock the LS1 would have 5 more HP and 15lbs lees torque but the LS1 has a TFS cam 216 int./220 exh duration and 0.560 int./0.560 exh. lift w/a LSA of 114 and LS1 valve spring which will make up for that plus the other upside is less weight. its only temporary but gives me time to play with the 6.0. Who knows maybe Santa and my income tax return will bring me a 427 stroker

I do have some F-body performance parts I will be selling to help the budget :fingersx:

  7. Well congrats on the new PB!. Sucks that she got hurt in the process. Just out of curiosity, what plugs were you running and how much timing did you pull?

The plugs are NGK TR5's they look good, not lean or anything abnormal. To be honest not sure what the timing is at, PCM4less tuned it for the nitrous. the engine has 113k on it and 60 or better passes with the tune. Its sitting in my shop right know and my other tech agrees its sound like a scared up cam lobe, I;'m not ruling out a piston until its torn down. I have the MSD LS6 controller I will be installing when I swap the engine.

  8. There are a couple of different LS6 cams the common one had a .525 lift and the has a .560 lift (forget the duration). I had the .525 lift LS6 cam laying around so I swapped it 9didn't cost me anything). The only real difference was a little more top end. If your going to due cam look around the are better ones for less.

  9. Well after a 113k and better than 60 passes on Nitrous I finally have some engine noise but at a not so good time. I dont have money in the budget for upgrades at this time but I do have an LS1 in my 85 Firebird I have, its down right know for a 4link rear with a strange 12bolt that was also put on hold due to the budget. I need my truck so I am just going to put the LS1 in it for now. It does have a Trick Flow Cam and LS6 valve springs. It will let take more time to build an egine for the truck. I guess the other plus is it weighs less.

  10. I got a new best time a NHRA Unleashed - 12.47 @ 107mph with a 1.6 60' time. I swapped to the TB torque converter and upped the NOS to a 175hp shot. Made 6 passes this weekend and on the last qualifying pass the truck was running good, left light (.176 on a pro tree, best reaction time all weekend and first time running a pro tree) The truck luanched hard and spun off the line. Had a 1.91 60' time (the worst so far) ended up running a 12.866 @ 108mph When I came to the trun off the truck stalled and when I restarted it I hard a tapping noise. We pulled the valve covers and checked all the rockers, pushrods and springs, they all are ok. It does not sound like a rod knock but it is time to tear into it.

  11. The 6spd is just a thought right know. doing the is not really a issue since I have an auto repair shop. Does anyone have the part# the one I have does not have a clear part# but is out a 6cyl Envoy, truck was a tota loss wreck with less miles than mine? I can call my GM dealer with the vin to make sure its the one need. As far as trans temp, mine does not run hot at all. Was about 150* till my gauges started acting, now out for repair.

  12. i remember hearing somthing about them being a ticking time bomb....... but i could be wrong dunno.gif

Well hopefully it holds together for a little while. I do have 112k on the original trans and have made many 12sec passes on the bottle. iwill be building a tranny next year or going 6spd.

Just installed one in mine, so far so good (only have less than 200 miles on it so far) :fingersx: Stalls up to 2800, definitely helps the SS get a better launch

Thats what I have heard for mostly stock applications w/bolt ons. Thats what I have right know.

  13. I have a Trailblazer TC Sitting in my shop (yes its good) Its out an earier TB forgot the year, it was 6cyl/4L60E. I remember people saying it helped the SS's. I was thinking of swapping mine. I am getting ready to service my tranny. Since I have a repair shop doing the work is no problem. I have a 112k on my stock trans (yes stock and runnng n2o). I know it can go anytime :fingersx: I will be building a tranny in the near future and will buy a good stall TC or may go 6spd and keep the AWD. I have a friend thats a machinist that can modify the rear housing on my T56 in my Firebird to accept the transfer case. Is it worth it to swap it, not going to cost anything just my labor?

  14. NHRA Unleahed is coming to Gainesville this weekend. I signed up a couple months ago to run the SS. I signed up for the 12.0 index, truck is running mid 12's. I know I won't be the fastest in the class I'm just hoping it will be one of bad track prep day :fingersx: where traction is an issue. The AWD makes it no problem :jester: Either way it should be fun. I think it will be on FOX Sports
