  1. I recently received from GM a letter regarding the 2003 Silverado saying the instrument panel needles may stick flutter or become inoperative.

GM is offering an extension to 7 years or 70,000 of the warranty covering this.

I was driving the truck Friday nite, and I noticed all my gauges weren't working. Now this could be the fauult of my battery failing or the cold weather. I replaced the battery with a red top, but was wondering if anyone else has had the instrument cluster act this way?

Included in the letter is a claim form in case work has been done to fix this issue before.

  2. Did yours come w/ the top post cover? I left mine on and just reinstalled the metal bar back over the top(and though the battery handle)of that and that seems to hold it way better then just the clip.

I'll have to see how the cover fits under the cross member with my particular battery. I wish the owners manual had said to move the cross member support out of the way to remove the battery. Found that out on the net. I was looking at the instructions, and almost think the Group 65 Wing Adapter should be used to get the battery to sit in the tray properly so that it fits snug with the Group 78 Puck Adapter. When it warms up I'll fiddle with it and see.

  3. I personally am not a huge fan of the yellow tops. In my dually, I used a red top and blue top. Reasoning below:

The yellow top is a deep cycle battery (deep cycle is really a style of discharge, moreso than actual battery construction; most batteries could be considered "deep cycle" if it were determined by construction alone). The yellow is meant to have a huge load applied to it for a long(er than usual) period of time. This is NOT how cranking our trucks over is defined. That kind of power is meant for things like winches or lots and lots of lights. Our trucks do not draw/load (read: crank) for more than 10 seconds, which is the period of time where necessary for a deep cycle battery to overtake a standard discharge style battery (performance-wise).

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the yellow top is a bad battery, or not to use it, just that its purpose isn't to start our trucks. Buy it for your old diesel or tractor.

The red top is a starting battery. It provides the maximum amount of power it can for the first 10 seconds of draw/load, which would be when you crank your truck over. (NOTE: The falloff of power is only slight gradual decline after 10 seconds, it doesn't just die, lol) For 80% of applications where a yellow top is used, a red top would work just dandily in its place. They also recharge easier than the yellow, and provide greater instant demand power.

The blue top is classified as a marine battery. Think of it as the yellow top on crack. The take to a charge like a tornado to a trailer park, and have a stupidly large amount of reserve power. They just don't....stop....cranking! (While diagnosing a problem on my MerCruiser motor, my blue top cranked the motor at full speed (on/off in a 10 second burst, repeat), for well over 2 hours. We gave up when it got dark, not when the battery died. Keep in mind the motor never ran, battery was never getting a charge. 2 hours. Stupidly large amount of reserve.) I chose to use the blue top for my dually's stereo system, because of it's great deep cycling abilities, it's quick recharge rate, and because its got the nice little marine style wing-nut threaded posts (easy connection for amps / extra devices).

A red top rocked my 1989 K1500, a red and a blue are in my 1988 Dually, a blue is in my boat and my 1983 camaro, and a blue and red will be in 03 SS. Oh yeah, and a nautilus 1200 is in my 1975 suburban (want to talk about cranking power... holy crap).

Feel free to ask any questions, I've been through a LOT of batteries.

    Ok. I'm done for now.

Okay, you said ask any questions, so here goes: I bought an Optima Red Top model 34-78 at Autoozone this morning. The zero weather here finally took a toll on the 4-5 year old AC-Delco stock battery. I had to change the battery in the cold. I used the GM clip provided by Optima, but it seemed not to lock down the battery. Does it lock down with this clip alone? Maybe I need to tighten it down some more, but because of the cold I just left it loose for now.

I just want to know if the clip alone does the job and I needed to tighen it further, or am I missing something?

BTW, online Autozone says the battery was one price and at the store it was 20 bucks more.

    Thanks for any help.

  4. Not even 1 person???  hmmm.  Are you still planning on going Joe?

I just remembered this. It's 6 pm here in St Chas. How long to get to Rockford from here, maybe an hour and a half?

Got to look up where Rockford Hooters is.

    Maybe I'll see ya.

I'm guessing It's somewhere around an hr drive. I'm running late! I won't be there till 7:45. If your still thinking about coming... COME

Sorry I missed you. The girls there were super nice. They said come back. Enjoyed the drive on I90.

I kind of screwed up. They all came out to have their picture taken, just as I was leaving.

    My truck at Hooters.

I had a good time. Hopefully we can get organized in N. Illinois for some rides, etc.

  5. Welcome.... I did the same thing only with our 94 suburban...tranny was slipping...which was #3 since we owned it...i refused to pay another $2200 for another rebuild...went to a chevy dealer to get an opinion on the tranny....while in the lot with the wife i spotted the sss but knew she wouldnt go for it...right next to it was an avalanche but it had cloth interior....the mrs said that black truck there is hot...you should go for that one..reverse psychology i guess....the next day i brought it home!!! i love it!! what a ride....good luck with your sss

Thanks for the welcome. This is hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned. Like I said before driving is fun again.

Already, I have a Century Evolution cargo cover and Bed Rug on order. Too bad the plastic tailgate protector/wing has to come off for the cargo cover. I sort of want to keep things as stock as possible.

  6. I'm always suprised of how broad a range there is in the mileage people get out of our stock GY tires.  Sure I know different poeple have different driving habits etc, but 25k-55k is a big difference.

I don't think the LS in our stock size is being made anymore according to TireRack, instead they have the LS-2 which has gotten really bad reviews so far.  The Michellin LTX has gotten great reviews though, and is available in our size but costs $200 each.

I found the LSs (non LS 2s) still available on the web. The Michelin site does not have a 20 inch tire for the 2003 Silverado SS listed.

I have 35000 miles on my SS and the tires hardly look used.

    I have the Eagle LSs.

The Bridgestone Dueller H/Ps are 297.99 in my area.

  8. Thats awesome... I can honestly say thats one of the best "I got a new truck" stories ever. Congrats... you'll love it.

I'm glad I found this site to tell it.

    Congrats!!!!

    Thanks Aspentaylor

I did a search and saw that the production run for the 2003 SSS was 1500. If thats true, is there any way to know which number (1 to 1500) we are?

    if I remember right its:

    6000 or so Black

    2500 or so Red

    1500 or so Blue

    :dunno:

    in 2003...

Thanks for the history. It's nice to know this stuff.

:withstupid: That is what I call compulsive buying. I also think I have a touch of that.

I have had my truck for over a year now, and every morning when I wake up, I still can't wait to drive it.

    Congrats

I look forward to my commute now. It's county driving. It just seems to get better each day. I knew I was interested in the SS before, opportunity knocked and the cogs were in place to have this happen.

Congrats on the truck, and welcome to the forum  :chevy:  And you got the best color, I've also got a Black 2003 SS  :D

    Mr. P. :)

What do you do when you see an SSS coming? Give them the low wave, or honk. Ususally they go by so fast I can't react. :D

  9. Congrats on the truck, your gonna love it and it's gonna love your money

scary part is someone musta traded it on a furd :yellow_loser:

It loves gas, I know that. It's worth it because it is so responsive.

Actually, the young man who owned it traded it for a Dodge diesel pickup on the Ford lot. Go figure. The Chevy dealer is right across the street, so I don't get it.

I look at this truck as a collectors item, but I also feel that it needs to used and not sitting in a garage.

  10. that when I woke up this morning, I'd be driving home in a 2003 Silverado SS.

Driving to my work, my Ford F150 check engine light came on. My Ford dealer was nearby and I had them check it out. To kill time, I walked around the lot, and I see the SS. What's that doing here?

I go back to the waiting room, kill some more time. I see a salesman go by. I ask what's the deal on the SS.

It took a while for the salesman to figure out the alarm. I get in, and go nice seats. I for go for a test ride. I know I want it. So I get it.

It's a really really nice ride. It made me smile and that's all you need.

All I need is a hard tonneau cover and a bed liner. I'm not ready for mods like you guys might do, yet. I still have a lot to learn about that.

I think I'm going to have a few questions on some of the gizmos it already has, so bear with me.
