Tiny Oil Filter

Any comments on the tiny oil filter on the SS? Man, this is a big departure from the good ole days where bigger was better. I used to have a quart and a half filter on my 396, the one on the new SS is the size of a fruit cup in a kids lunch box. Anyone know of a higher capacity filter? Or can anyone offer any comforting advice about his tiny thing?

The PF44 AC Delco filter is very small, but seems to be rated among the better filters on the market. I'm getting close to 3K miles and bought a PF44 at Auto Zone for 3 bucks and change. I'm trying to decide on regular oil or synthetic at the first change. I believe you can buy a larger filter that holds about a 1/4 quart more and is slightly longer to fit the SS for about the same price. :chevy:

The ACDelco PF58 has the same threads & diameter as the PF44 but is slightly longer (1/4 quart more oil).

There's also the UltraGuard verison (UPF58) at several times the price, if they still make it .

I would say go ahead and use synthetic at the first oil change - the sooner the better. Some people disagree with that. Do some research and if you're still set on switching to synthetic, make the change when you feel comfortable.

I've heard and read numerous claims about synthetic oil causing leaks, voiding warranties, etc. As for the use of synthetics during break-in, this site has an interesting take on it (it's for HD motorcycles, but hey! :P):

There are some interesting sub-links concerning synthetic oil at that last URL.
