For instance, when you pull the power cord, it automatically dims a little to save power. The hd will go to sleep after a while if no activity - don't disable it, etc.. I always bring the brightness back up when it dims and it still will lasts close to a hour and a half. There are tons of spares on ebay right now. Not sure how much, just remember seeing.
