dcairns
I know, I have way too much time on my hands, but I was poking around the GM drivetrain website and found an interesting bit about the High Output 6.0 and it's features. I highlighted an interesting bit about the better manufaucturing tolerences for this engines. At least we won't have to worry about the dreaded engine knock problem, assuming it is much of a problem in the first place. But they seem to acknowledge that there is a bit of a problem there. jwest1975
Umm, I'm not very mechanical at all. Are they saying that you can go up to 10,000 miles before you change the oil? I have always done it at about 3,000 or so. Also, If I'm reading it correctly...there is a computer read out of some type that indicates when you should change the oil? boycer
I think that oil companies and dealerships tell you to change the oil that often so they make more money. You do need to keep a close eye on it though if you are going over 3000 miles.

Justin On the 97 vette you are supposed to go to 10,000 between the oil changes, and on the 02 you are supposed to go 15,000 miles between changes. RATFINK
Whoever wrote thjat doesn't know shit about the mechanics of a engine. The crankshaft tolerances have nothing to do with cold knock. Cold knock also known as "piston slap" is caused by excessive piston to bore clearance. dcairns
RF, that is what I have heard too, but I have also heard one explanation from GM that it can be caused by too much clearance in one of the main bearings. Kind of an ugly mental picture of the crank slamming onto the bearing surface comes to my mind The whole issue seems rather overblown in forums on the internet, but it is interesting that they are addressing it. RATFINK
If the knocking were actually coming from the main bearings I assure you they'd not survive. Been there done that. :o RF

C5SilverBullet
I always change it at 3-5k, oil is still like brand new, and no consumption problems.
mgm13
Vettes come factory filled with full synthetic oil (Mobil 1) which allows for longer change interval. Anyone that can pay the price for a new SS can afford $25 and change every 3,000 miles or 3 months it is the cheapest insurance you can buy! LarryE
I normally change mine in the silverado around 7K on synthetic, only time it gets any road wear is during show season.
PotbellyJoe
I don't think keeping the oil in for that long would be healthy, even if it is syntetic, i mean the oil gets dirt and contaminants in it, so even if the oil could go until 15,000 i don't think you'd really want to go past 5000. just my $0.02 -Joe
