JL Audio installer talked me out of Cleansweep

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is not in the right forum area. I jsut wanted it to be seen quickly for some advice.

So there I was trying diligently to install the Stealthbox, JL Audio 500/1 Amp and CleanSweep when I ran into a few dilemmas. First, after doing plenty of research on this website (thanks guys), I felt I was ready to install these pieces of audio equipment. First, to install the stealthbox under the passenger rear seat will require dropping the heat shroud that protects the bottom of the truck from the heat from the exhaust (not an easy task). Second, once I got access to the wire cluster coming out of the amplifier I was further stumped. So I took it to an Audio Specialist in Hopkinsville, KY just outside of FT Campbell, KY. A place that boasts two of the top 100 installers in the country. There he basically told me that I wasted my money on the Cleansweep unless I am going to change all the Bose speakers to something better. He called them $12 GM speakers. Best $12 speakers I have heard recently.

Anyway, should I go with better speakers to use the Cleansweep (a $450 dollar paperweight right now) I cant complain I got a 25% discount and no sales tax. He said ZRs are too pricey and I can get you the same or better sound from some Boston Acoustics. What is up with an authorized JL Audio installer "shooting me straight?" He said tomorrow he will hook me up with a LOC with a power switch to the subs, if I dont need the bass. That will allow me to use all the steering wheel controls and allow me to upgrade later if I so choose.

imo i would do the same setup you were doing. i dont know why you have to remove the heat shield for the stelthbox though. imo he was correct in saying you should replace the door speakers but a loc will work ok for just adding a sub. imo i would still do the cleansweep with just a sub in case you ever decide to change the door speakers.

i did everything you did and added door speakers. they may be bose door speakers but a paper cone'd speaker is still a paper cone'd speaker. put in an amp to power door speakers and see how long those will last. invest in the cleansweep and new door speakers. well worth the money.

im totally confused. is this a single four channel amp setup? why not just get a monotube amp for the subs and a second amp for door speakers and deck? cleansweep only cost me 299.00 and if you want to keep factory deck and or use steering wheel controls with second amp its a must anyways. im kinda lost. :dunno:

I have an Alpine MRA-D550 theater amp hooked up to the stock Bose door speakers and it sounds damn good. I've had it like that for a while with no problems at all. Everyone that has heard my system in my truck has had nothing but good things to say about how it sounds whether it be a DVD, CD, iPod, etc.

to put it to you straight, DITCH THE CLEAN SWEEP! as for the speakers, its your money and your ears, buy what you like and can afford. I am running a HUGE 4 channel and a sub amp off of my factory head and it sounds awesome!!!! just my $.02

then again who am I?

The JL Audio 500/1 is a one channel amp pushing 400 watts. As for the cleansweep, it has come to my attention that the Autoshop on FT Campbell, jacked up the price of the Cleansweep so the 25% discount wouldn't kill them. It lists at Audio Specialists of Hopkinsville, KY for $399 (I still beat it with the 25% discount though). The Cleansweep comes in various styles with the CL 441DSP running the price I mentioned.

The cleansweep saga conclusion. After about six weeks of trying to install my JL Audio speakers and Cleansweep (see sig). I took the truck to Audio Specialists of Hopkinsville, Kentucky for a complete reinstall. They liked the fact that I modified the rear seat to drop and attached the 300/4 to the rear wall.

The installed the Cleansweep on the hump between the Stealthbox and 500/1. The trick that I could not figure out was getting a Sub feed out of the four channels going into the Cleansweep. Their fix as to "Y cable" the rear channel so full range goes to rear speakers through the 300/4 and LP goes to 500/1. Can you say fricking awesome? I attempted everything from preamping the 500/1 through the 300/4, no deal.

Also after installing the panasonic DVD player it was hooked through the Cleansweep aux input (same as you would with an IPOD) and DVDs sound awesome inside the truck (when I want to listen to them). However, my little girl has the control of the remote currently and I can only listen to Cat in the Hat, Step UP, High School Musical, or a hundred other kiddie DVDsfor limited periods of time. I can press the master volume and listen to my own music while she listens through the IR headsets.

The install charges were rather steep but worth it. Time effort aside, I should have done this months ago.

Hope this helps anyone interested in the Cleansweep. It does sound awesome.

Mark
