service managers plan to fix groan

Recommended Posts

what groan are you referring to? maybe we can determine what the "groan" is and then beable to advise you on what work they are actually performing. usually, service managers have very little actual mechanical knowledge. usually, they are the "head sales person" for the service shop and not a actual mechanic.

If the hubs were the culprit you'd have noise while also driving in a straight line; the problem is failed differential bearings, it's been documented here several times before. AFA dealing with your service manager, just play along and tell them you are still certain the front differential is the problem but invite them to go ahead and try the hubs first, and when they blow an entire 1/2-day in parts & labor and the issue is still there then they will have learned the hard way. If after the hub service it still makes noise be sure to stand your ground and refuse to pay their labor chasing wild geese because they made a mistake and mis-diagnosed the issue; when your truck is fixed it should be silent, exactly like a brand new '03 AWD Escalade.

FWIW I've got that same noise in my truck; one of these days I'm going to have to take it to a drivetrain specialist to have it fixed right, I'll probably save up and have an Eaton LSD installed in the rear diff at the same time.

Hey misterp

thank you for the advice  Im just trying to get this settled so i can have my zippy kit, zippy tune ,and tbtc so i dont blow the warranty... my concern is if i let them do the hub bearings and they dont get it right because of not getting the tolerances right or something im just "feeding the spider the fly" if you know what i mean.

i can live with it thanks to bose but i paid for the warranty...its not gonna blow or anything like that is it?

thanks,

rob

I gave up on the groaning complaint. My front diff pinion seal was leaking, they screwed up the bearing preload while replacing it and took out the bearings. They put a brand new diff in and that groaning noise was still there. Good luck!

I've had two complete rebuilds of the front diff in the last 10 months. :banghead: Last time was a month ago and the grind is back. I have a decent dealer, but he is very frustrated with my truck right now, so I wish you better luck than I. I've read where some had the entire differential replaced with a new unit to resolve the noise. That will be my next attempt. I agree with others, let them mess with the hubs if they want to, that's their headache. Either way, good luck.

Mr. P, can you elaborate a little on the real way to fix this issue? I love the truck, but can't take this differential issue any longer. Any help is appreciated.

Stealership is crazy not to get a replacement ,they are cheap and you can do one in an 1-1.5 hr

:withstupid:

we should start to check this out and post some part #'s and prices.

What other benfits would come from getting a new rear diff? added durability?

This would be a very good idea. I personally don't worry about the rear differential so much, but a true fix to the front would be nice.

BmanSS: Thanks for the info, I am going to contact the dealership and tell them what they need to do next.

I took my old unit apart and found the driverside carrier bearing locking tab broken and the passenger side carrier bearing trashed. I am replacing all bearings and seals, gears look fine. The new unit cost 800 bucks from the dealer, GM would only offer 20% off and I had to give them the old unit so I kept it. New parts are $180 thats all bearings and seals + locking tabs. Bought all my parts from Riverside Gear 517-663-4410 they were very helpfull and said they don't know of a complete fix for the failures. Bottom line I have my spare unit to fall back on..Hope some one else can come up with a complete repair so this doesn't happen again..

Yes you will get some new hubs out of it but is that worth some dude taking the front end apart, not many care anymore at the dealers!!

BTW I have the same noise, from the front diff. Still under warr as the truck was on the road Oct of 2004. Only 35,000km's

Ok so now I have been told that they will do the hub bearings and "look at the carrier" if there is no damage I will be resonsilble for the entire bill to reinstall. :banghead: wtf! They replaced the right side seal about a month ago and I swear the groan/grind is getting louder!

Do we have any recourse for this ? "Its normal AWD noise I am being told.

Do you have an extended warranty? I guess so with it being an '03. Let them do the hubs if they think that's it. It's not, but let them diagnose it, if it doesn't fix it, it's on them. Hubs are noisey going straight too. It's not an evasive repair, you don't have to tear the front end apart. It's about a 15-20 minute repair per side tops. With all this, they have at least admitted there is a noise and a problem, since they are trying to fix something. So, when the hubs don't fix it, then let them continue with whatever they think it is next. If you tell them what you want done, and they don't find anything, it's on you. So, be patient and play along.
