Is PCM tune and Dyno Same Thing?

Sorry for the stupid question, but is getting a PCM face-to-face tune the same thing as getting your truck Dyno'd? Im rather new to this whole engine customizing area. I have the basics like an intake, exhaust and headers, and think I am ready for a tune. the relativley inexpensive price of a tune in contrast with the performance gains seems liek a no-brainer.

 

I was just wondering if a tune and a dyno are the same thing or if they are different and which one you all would recommend?

If you mean dyno tune vs. mail order tune, then a dyno tune would be better. A dyno tune would allow the tuner to see exactly what your motor is doing and make the correct adjustments. I.E. I have a mail order tune from PCM4LESS and I am getting KR in my higher rpm range going from 2nd to 3rd gear and then again 3rd to 4th gear. A dyno tune would pick that up and the tuner would fix it.

What does KR stand for and after you define it, what does it mean lol?

 

Is "dyno tune" the same thing as a "face-to-face" tune?

 

Also, having only a few mods, will a pcm4less or zippy tune be adequate for me, or would a face to face or dyno still be better? Have you heard of Nelson tune in Texas?

kr = knock retard , is when the knock sensors detect pinging, is when a cylinder pre ignites similar to how diesels work.its bad for gas engines.

 

nelson is a good tuner from what i hear, a dyno tune is somethign thaat has to be done in person , a dyno is the big machine you drive your truck on and the wheels spin on a huge roller and it tells you your power output. and can also tell you other things like air fuel ratio and it helps a tuner determine whats the best tune.

 

an in person tune is also good to do it on the street becasue it will tell you how your truck best performs in real life conditions. a mail order tune is good but not as good as the others.

I am having a road tune done locally as soon as I get all my parts installed. They can't do a dyno tune because they only have a 2 wheel dyno. I am going to take it about an hour away afterwards and do some dyno pulls at another place that does import tunes.

I prefer a street tune over a dyno tune anyday. Our trucks are on the STREET all its life. If we have our wot fuel where it needs to be "Same way as on the dyno using a wideband" , and the spark is set where we want it" max with no Knock retard" , AND the drivability is perfect "Hard to do or see problems when on a dyno" , then you have a better tune all together.

 

The only thing you dont have is braggin numbers from your HP sheet.....

 

However, Numbers dont mean to much if the Dyno used has not been properly calibrated. Remmeber, the dyno has a perameter that states the rotating weight of the roller drum, if you make a bigger or smaller number on that perameter, it changes the values of hp and torque made. so, if someone wants to cheat they can :( I made a 78 hp ford escort show 320 on a run to mess with a couple of peoples heads in town on a dyno day. :) No one would race him that whole weekend! it was hilarious! :)

i agree with wait4 me, a dyno tune is really only good for #'s but it can help . like for instance im going to use a dyno to determien exaclt where to lock up my torque converter. it will be found by doign a pull with it locked and unlocked . At some point the hp and torqu curves will cross eachother(unlocked vs locked) and that will help determine exactly where to lock it up.

 

but a street tune is just as good as a dyno tune if not better since your truck will see different types of driving conditions than a dyno.
