mgm13
Anyone out there had a positive experience with a dealer's service department in regards to this horrible cold start engine noise? Sounds like a DuraMax for about 45seconds after startup and goes away till the next cold start-I am talking Texas cold 75plus so it is not ambient temp related. Dealer says its a normal characteristic of the engine and refuses to do anything. Truck started doing the clatter routine at 18,000miles now at 30,000 and still sounding off. Makes you wonder why any of us could be anxious to spend $40grand for a new SS? mgm13msn.com
99Xtreme
I read on on a pickuptruck.com forum that to get rid of the clatter on the 5.3's the dealers were replacing the pistons on them and that fixed the issue.Another one said withe 6.0 clatter that now GM will either give you a whole motor[supposedly some redesigned 2003 version],or a 100,000 mile warranty on the existing engine, and if it would let go they would replace it with a rebuilt motor under that warranty. cadowns
Here is the TSB information that GM is using to fix these problems. http://www.expage.com/gmtsbs My cousin had a 5.3 replaced under this plan.
tony
the noise in the in these engines comes down to one thing-better fuel economy-my 5.3 achieves up to 20 mpg-this is because of the piston/ cylinder wall design. allows extreme carbon build up over time. and if you think about say you get a new engine-what makes you think that the new engine is not going to create this same knocking noise-i do agree that a 30k truck should not clatter on start up. but as long as the noise goes away with in 60 sec. i can live with it. it is still a heck of a truck. and furd and dog will never be as good. tony
one more thing just to let you know gm does make something to prevent the cold start engine noise-it sells for around $30 per oil change. it is called mobil 1. yes it is expensive every three thousand miles but it really depends how much it is worth to you to reduce or eliminate engine clatter. and i am not going to say that this is a cure for a 100,000 mi truck-but if from your first oil change you use mobil 1. i would put $ on it that your truck never develops this condition- at least for the first 100,000 mi. who knows i could be wrong. but i dont think i am

It doesnt help with the engine knock. I now have 32K miles. Am i worried about the knock? Not really. Why? How many engine failures or problems (other than a noise) have you heard of? Until then i will have piece of mind (along with my 100K mile engine warranty )
