Thinking of moving to Vegas

Since I lost my job in the telecom industry for the 3rd time in 6 years, my wife and I are thinking of moving to a better market so that I can have some better job security/stabability. Vegas is one of the largest telecommunications and IT hotspots in the country, and it just so happens to be our favorite vacation spot, so we're thinking of moving there. Do any of you locals have any tips before I commit to anything?

Is there emissions testing there?

Can I tint my windows there at all?

I've heard that living South or West of Vegas are the "good" spots to be in. I want to be on the "right side of the tracks" so to speak. Is West and South where I really want to be? I'll be looking for a house probably within a year, but will live in an apartment or condo until I get settled unless we find an ideal home to jump into.

Anything else that I need to know?

there is emissions testing but it not really strict like california.

i have never been pulled over for my tint (5%) all except windshield, you would def get pulled over for that. i don't think rear and sides window tint is illegal here.

you would want to stay away from central and north las vegas. im in the south east. summerlin, green valley, and henderson are probably the better three.

you should be able to tolerate the climate, i know iowa gets hot too, but vegas isn't as humid so thats a plus.

Yeah, we've been there at all times of the year. We were there about 5 or 6 years ago when some high temperature streaks were being broken. It was something like 9 or 10 days straight of 110+ temps. We got our first day at 114, and thought, "Hey, let's beat the heat tomorrow and get an early start". When we left the casino at 7:30 AM it was 100 and it was 110+ before 9AM!!! :puke: Later in the week, we came back home to 98 degrees of humid heat and it felt more uncomfortable. As you mentioned, it's the humidity that makes you uncomfortable, even in the air conditioning. One thing though, the direct sun will get you MUCH quicker in Vegas if you don't stay hydrated and covered in sunscreen. I was torched red the first day and paid for it the rest of that summer.

Thanks for the knowledge!

EDIT: For the emissions, do they put you on a dyno to sniff, or is it pure visual?

hook up computer, probe the tail pipe  , and i've never seen em do a visual before, which i hope they don't do the next time either.

i went to iowa last summer and im going again this summer, and my buddy is always saying how hot it is (hes from california), but it doesn't feel like anything compared to dry 110 direct sunlight. you do feel sticky out there though and a cold shower feels great.

Yeah, the direct sunlight is no comparison. For me, it's the fact that in air conditioning in Vegas is just fine. AC in Iowa you still have the humidity going and you still sweat. We run 2 dehumidifiers in the summer time, otherwise we can't sleep at night because the sheets feel wet from the humidity! :banghead:

you cant move to nevada, the governor closed all borders to new people attempting to move here. effective april 15th. especially refugees from california.

just kidding. i am in northwest nevada near reno. only washoe county has emmissions testing here. i live in lyon county ( the fastest growing county in the united states) and there is no emmision testing here. i am only 45 minutes from reno. and about the same from lake tahoe.

we use evaporative coolers here and very little refrigerated (a/c) air. cheaper to run and does a better job.
